Who is Malachi Moreno? 7-footer from Kentucky leads Great Crossing to Cintas Center win

Malachi Moreno, a 7-foot junior center from Great Crossing High School in Georgetown, Kentucky, was at Cintas Center last week for the Xavier Musketeers' 80-75 loss to the No. 4 UConn Huskies.

Moreno ranks No. 3 among centers in the 2025 class and No. 1 among players in the state of Kentucky, according to on3.com.

Moreno helped Great Crossing to a King of the Bluegrass title in December, and earned MVP honors with 11 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals in the championship game against Little Rock Central.

Moreno helped Great Crossing to a win Sunday at Cintas Center.

Moreno and Great Crossing defeated Princeton High School on Sunday, 79-74, in the LaRosa's Holiday Hardwood Classic. Moreno earned Player of the Game honors.

Moreno had 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes of action.

Great Crossing was the only school from outside Greater Cincinnati participating in the event, which also hosted six games December 28.

Moreno also visited the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Moreno was in Clifton in November 2022, and also visited UC late last year.

He reportedly also has made unofficial visits to Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Arkansas and Tennessee, per Joe Tipton.

Others have offered Moreno, per 247sports.com, including Alabama, Baylor, Clemson, Creighton, Eastern Kentucky, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Missouri, NC State, Penn State, Providence, Purdue, Syracuse, USC and Virginia Tech.

Moreno's older brother plays for EKU.

Michael Moreno, who attended Scott County High School, is a 6-foot-7 senior forward for the Colonels. He had 18 points in a December loss at Alabama.

He's in his fifth season in Richmond.

Moreno said he wants to commit by June.

Moreno said his deadline to commit is June, per Tipton, as he doesn't "plan to be one of those that commits his senior year because scholarships can be taken at that point."

Tipton also quoted Moreno has saying he's looking for "a family environment" in a school.

Great Crossing's only loss came in double overtime in Myrtle Beach.

Moreno's school lost in the championship of the Beach Ball Classic, to Bishop O'Connell of Arlington, Virginia, on December 30.

Moreno led Great Crossing with 24 points and 25 rebounds in the final.
