Maclay School football team set to play in Ireland in 2024; second area team invited

A third Tallahassee football team is heading to Ireland.

Maclay School's football team confirmed to the Democrat Tuesday that it will play in Dublin, Ireland in August 2024. The Marauders will face another school from the United States as part of the Global Football Ireland tour.

It joins the Chiles High School's football team, which has been invited to the event but has not yet confirmed if it will attend.

Florida State will face Georgia Tech on Aug 24, 2024, in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.

Maclay will play its game at Donnybrook Stadium and FSU will play its game at the Aviva Stadium.

The next step after receiving approval from the school's leadership is to begin fundraising for travel expenses according to head coach Jason Cauley. The estimated cost per players is between $4000-$4500, and the school will rely on various fundraisers and donations to send the team on the trip.

"For the kids, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go represent our school and go represent their families on foreign soil, and also play a day before Florida State," Cauley said. "Again, I think it's just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these kids and something that they will never forget for the rest of their lives."

The Mauraders will join Chiles, pending Leon County School's approval and fundraising, Miami Belen Jesuit, and the Community School of Naples as the fourth Florida high school football team to make the over 4000-mile journey to Ireland.

Maclay will also attend the FSU/Georgia Tech game and will participate in a parade and pep rally that will take place in Dublin. Schools are encouraged to bring their bands and other athletics programs along on the trip.

Cauley, who comes from Irish roots, said that there will be educational tours of Ireland included in their trip, giving the team a chance to see some of the historic landmarks and castles of the country days before gameday. For some of his team, it also gives them the opportunity to learn more about their lineage.

"I thought it was intriguing, me having Irish roots and about 20-25% of our team having Irish roots it just made a lot of sense for us to be interested," Cauley said.

Maclay went 4-7 last season in Cauley's first season as head coach and lost 42-14 in the first round of the Class 1S Region 1 playoff against North Florida Christian. Six Marauders were selected for All-Big Bend football teams this past fall.

There are also a few FSU connections to Maclay.

Current long snapper Peyton Naylor and senior quarterback Michael Grant are signed with the Seminoles this year, and could be part of the Seminole squad that goes to Ireland.
