Orlando was stunned. Friday night at Providence Park was supposed to be leisurely for the best team in women's soccer. The Pride had wrapped up the league's shield on Sunday and felt confident enough in the safety of their unbeaten season that they rested some of their starters – such as Marta – for their match against the Thorns. Portland hadn't won in league play since July, and the Thorns were without stars Sophia Smith and Hina Sugita.
