At the Senior Bowl this week, Luke Falk is doing his best to get the attention of scouts ahead of April’s NFL draft.

But the ex-Washington State quarterback is also honoring a fallen teammate.

Tyler Hilinski, Falk’s backup the past two seasons, took his own life earlier this week. He was just 21 years old. To honor Hlinski, Falk switched his number to his teammate’s No. 3 for the week of practice and next Saturday’s game.

On Thursday, two days after Hilinski’s death, Falk released a statement about his late friend via Washington State.

“We are heartbroken and devastated with the passing of Tyler. Like many, we are in disbelief. He was an amazing person who brought love and joy to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him,” Falk said. “Not only did he touch the lives of those close to him but also the lives of people who we are sure he was unaware of.

“Tyler had a constant drive for perfection that should encourage us to fulfill our dreams. I hope that we can use each day to show those who are closest to us how much we care about them, and treat others with the kindness and respect that we wish for ourselves. We pray that Tyler and his family realize all the great things he accomplished in his time with us.”

Another Washington State player at the Senior Bowl, offensive lineman Cole Madison, is also honoring Hilinski.

A candlelight vigil was held for Hilinski outside Martin Stadium on Friday night.
