LSU women's basketball at Vanderbilt: Score prediction, scouting report

It was almost like fans saw a different LSU women's basketball team Sunday against Florida inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Kim Mulkey didn't run a completely new lineup out there but she did try something new to this season, giving Last-Tear Poa more playing time which allowed point guard Hailey Van Lith to slide over to the off-ball guard position, her natural spot.

The move went off like a cinch as No. 13 Tigers (19-4, 6-3 SEC) demolished the Gators, 106-66.

"It was a lot smoother," Mulkey of LSU's offense.

Six players scored in double figures for LSU, led by Van Lith and freshman Mikaylah Williams' 21 points. Aneesah Morrow (18 points, 20 rebounds) and Angel Reese (14 points, 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles while Flau'jae Johnson pitched in 10 points.

Can Mulkey's group sustain it? That's the questions as the Tigers travel to take on Vanderbilt (17-6, 4-5) Thursday night (8 p.m., SEC Network).

Has Kim Mulkey awaken the LSU women's basketball monster?

The test at Vandy will be a pretty big indicator on how much this team came together and got better during their "bye" week last week. It's obvious that Poa playing more and Van Lith thriving with her extended minutes off the ball appears to give LSU its best chance at winning.

It's hard to believe, but LSU's starting lineup has only played all together in a dozen games this season. It seems to have taken the players as well as Mulkey all this time to lean into deeper rotations.

Mulkey will likely her guards more and if efficiency remains at least close to what LSU had against Florida, the team will be a tough out.

LSU tied with Ole Miss, Mississippi State at 3rd in SEC standings

Losing twice in a row was jarring for LSU in the Southeastern Conference standings last week. The preseason favorites to win the league sat tied for fourth with Mississippi State, who they had just lost to last Monday. Had the season ended then, LSU would've missed out on the double bye for the SEC Tournament due to the tiebreaker.

But the win over Florida propelled the Tigers back up to a tie for third, now in a tie with Ole Miss, whom they've beat and State. In this case, MSU would end up the No. 3 seed while LSU would be No. 4 and Ole Miss fifth.

LSU needs to continue to win if it's going to clinch a double bye again in Greenville and the matchup with the Commodores is a big one.

Vanderbilt scouting report

Shea Ralph has Vanderbilt playing the best it's played in some time this season.

For the Dores, it starts on the defensive end. Vandy holds opponents to 39% shooting. They have players like Sacha Washington at 6-2 and Tennessee transfer Justin Pissott that can guard inside or outside players, creating some mismatches at times and have the ability to get teams out of what they want to do offensively.

Senior guard Jordyn Cambridge is one of the top scorers in the SEC but where she may shine best in distributing the ball. Washington as well as other guard Iyana Moore excel on offense for Vanderbilt and the main reason is Cambridge finding them open in spots they favor.
