LSU women's basketball at Georgia: Score prediction, scouting report
LSU women's basketball looks to close out the 2023-24 regular season in style as the last week arrives.
The final descent for the No. 9 Tigers (24-4, 11-3 SEC) starts at Georgia (12-15, 3-11) inside Stegeman Coliseum on Thursday night (8 p.m., ESPN2).
Kim Mulkey and LSU have won six straight games, a 76-60 victory at Tennessee last time out, and have locked up a double-bye in next week's SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. One more win would secure the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament for the Tigers.
Georgia comes into the matchup off a rare SEC win — its third on the season — over Florida, 76-60.
Where will Georgia find points against LSU women's basketball's improved defense
To put it bluntly, Georgia can't score.
The Bulldogs are at the bottom of the league in offensive output, just 64.3 points per game. Despite making 40.7% of it shots, Georgia just doesn't get enough shots off as it also posts more than 16 turnovers per game.
In conference play, those numbers get worse at 59.5 points per game. The Bulldogs have scored more than 60 points against an SEC foe five times out of 14 games.
LSU has worked tirelessly on its defense the last month and it's paid off as its held its last six opponents at 66 points and below as well as keeping them under a 39.9 field goal percentage.
Name to know: Javyn Nicholson
It's true that Georgia's offense leaves a lot to be desired but coach Katia Abrahamson-Henderson has one of the better scorers and post players on her team in senior forward Javyn Nicholson.
Nicholson played solidly against the Tigers in two meetings last season, scoring 23 points across two close games and was a solid, physical defensive presence inside for the Bulldogs at 6-foot-2.
This season, Nicholson ranks eighth in the SEC in scoring, averaging 16.7 points per game and she averaged 14.5 shot attempts per game, good enough for the third-highest clip in the conference.
Kim Mulkey, LSU look to lock up SEC Tournament No. 2 seed
In the last week, Mulkey has said her team's goal for the remainder of the regular season is to finish second behind No. 1 South Carolina and grab the No. 2 seed for the SEC Tournament.
LSU can accomplish that feat with a win in Athens, Georgia on Thursday night.
