LSU softball sets SEC Softball Tournament records with 14-inning 3-2 win over Alabama
LSU softball put together a record-setting performance in its SEC tournament lid-lifter Wednesday against 9-seed Alabama, literally.
With bases loaded and one down, graduate student left-handed hitter Taylor Pleasants connected on a pitch and sailed it over Alabama centerfielder Kristen White's head to bring home Sierra Daniel in the bottom of the 14th inning for the winning run to advance the Tigers to the quarterfinals on Thursday with a 3-2 victory.

Most innings played in an SEC Softball Tournament game
Record: 14 innings | LSU vs. Alabama | 2024 SEC Softball Tournament
Pleasants' heroics Wednesday at Auburn's Jane B. Moore Field capped off the longest-inning played game in SEC tournament history, surpassing the previous record of the Lady Vols' 1-0 win over Mississippi State in 13 innings back in the 2022 SEC Softball Tournament.
Heading into the bottom of the 14th inning, LSU left seven runners on base when in scoring position. From an individual standpoint, it was just the sixth RBI that Pleasants has picked up in the last two months — a feat that both Pleasants and the Tigers hope to use as momentum to get her bat going in the postseason.
Sydney Berzon sets SEC Softball Tournament record with innings pitched
Naturally, when a game starts at 10 a.m. CT and goes 14 innings deep, it isn't the only record that is set.
Tigers sophomore ace Sydney Berzon set the SEC Softball Tournament record for most innings pitched in a singular game as the LSU starter went the full distance, tossing the entire 14 innings. The Buffalo, New York native finished with 208 pitches, 129 of which were called for a strike, across 56 batters faced. Perhaps a bit more impressively, of the 42 outs Berzon got Wednesday, only five came by the strikeout.
“I had made a comment to Coach yesterday that I told her I would do whatever it took and I wasn’t going to back down from it," Berzon told SEC Network's Alyssa Lang after the game. "I found it within me and I made it work.”
NAILS. 💪

🔺10 | The defense holds, and Sydney Berzon joins LSU's Dani Hofer (2007), Ashley Lewis (1999), and Brandi Landry (1998) for the most innings pitched for the program in an SEC Tournament game at 10.0 frames.

Ali Newland game saving catch in the 11th inning
LSU's big day was close to not happening.
In the bottom of the 11th inning, Alabama had a runner-in-scoring position at second with two outs. White looked to have gotten enough on the barrel to poke the game-winning hit into left field for the Crimson Tide but then came LSU left fielder Ali Newland making the game-saving diving catch on the left field foul line.
