LSU coach Kim Mulkey on Caitlin Clark record: 'She is who she is, and that's awesome'

LSU coach Kim Mulkey, who grew up in Louisiana and led Hammond to four state championships in high school, remembers watching Pete Maravich growing up.

After the No. 7 Tigers' 77-56 win over Kentucky on Sunday, Mulkey commented on Iowa star Caitlin Clark becoming the NCAA's all-time leading scorer in both the men's and women's category, surpassing Maravich.

“I’m gonna get long-winded here, okay?” Mulkey said. “Pete Maravich could do things with the basketball that I had never seen done in my life. Who can go behind your back, between your legs, and he could just see things ahead of his time. The movie, y’all see his movie back in the day? A lot of it was filmed in Hammond and Ponchatoula. So I was just glued to all the videos and the things that he did.

“I don’t look at comparing apples to oranges. What (Caitlin) Clark has done is unbelievable and her name will be right up there at the top. But he played over here with no 3-point line (for) three years and I don’t think we need to make too much of ‘oh she passed him’ because he’s a man. She’s who she is and that’s awesome, and her lord knows when I played against her, 'I was like are you kidding me?' What a generational talent.”

Mulkey and LSU saw Clark themselves last season, when the Tigers defeated Iowa 102-85 in the 2023 National Championship, despite Clark scoring 30 points on 9 of 22 shooting.

Maravich, one of the greatest college basketball players ever, averaged 44.2 points per game at LSU and scored 3,667 points in three seasons, despite playing before the 3-point line was established.

Clark, who's averaging a nation-leading 32.3 points and 8.7 assists per game this season, surpassed Maravich's mark with a 35-point showing in the Hawkeyes' 93-83 win over Ohio State on Sunday. She now has 3,685 career points.
