Comeback bid comes up short as LSU basketball's winning streak snapped vs. Auburn

LSU basketball's winning streak came to an end Saturday as the Tigers fell to the Auburn Tigers, 93-78

LSU (10-6, 2-1 SEC) opened hot, taking a lead into the first media timeout. However, the break gave Auburn (14-2, 3-0) the chance to regroup, immediately going on a run and forcing LSU coach Matt McMahon to call a timeout.

LSU kept it close through much of the first half, but in the half's final minutes, the team went through a scoring drought of longer than five minutes. During that drought, Auburn rattled off 13 straight points, and by the halftime break the deficit was 17.

In the second half, it was Auburn that got out to the hot start, extending the lead to 28 points with under 12 minutes remaining. However, LSU battled back, cutting the deficit to the single digits. Ultimately, with the final media timeout also came the final momentum shift, allowing Auburn to stretch the lead one last time.

Comeback comes up short

Facing a 28-point hole with 11:35 left, LSU played nearly perfectly on both ends of the court for the remainder of the game. However, the deficit was too much to overcome. LSU got the score within eight points with under two minutes remaining, but that was as close as the two teams were for all of the second half. In the minute of game time after cutting the deficit to eight, Auburn's lead again ballooned to 17.

Turnovers cause trouble

LSU averaged just over 13 turnovers per game prior to Saturday, but against Auburn, LSU struggled to take care of the ball. LSU turned it over 17 times, allowing Auburn to score 26 points off those turnovers.

Opposite fortunes for two-time transfers

Tulane transfer Jalen Cook had been a focal point of LSU's offense since he was ruled eligible as a second-time transfer last month. On Saturday, it looked like more of the same: he made each of his first three shots across the first four minutes. Over his final 14 minutes, though, he cooled off significantly, missing his final five attempts and finishing with at minus-16 in the plus-minus.

His fellow second-time transfer, Trae Hannibal, had a near opposite game. After being shut out in the first half, the former South Carolina Gamecock and Murray State Racer erupted for a team-high 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the second.
