LSU baseball wins series against Xavier as pitching staffs gives up 4 runs in 3 games
LSU baseball won yet another weekend series, taking two of three games against Xavier over the weekend at Alex Box Stadium.
The pitching staff for No. 2 Tigers (14-2) kept the Musketeers in check all three days, not allowing more than two runs in any game during the series. LSU won the series opener, 4-0, and won game two, 8-2. Xavier topped LSU, 2-1, Sunday as the Tigers went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position in the final four innings.
Here are three takeaways from the 2-1 weekend for the Tigers:
LSU baseball pitcher Gage Jump getting stronger as SEC play approaches
LSU coach Jay Johnson has said that Gage Jump's recovery and was going to be a big piece to LSU's staff. Jump is showing Tiger fans what they have to look forward to as he's getting stronger with each appearance.
The sophomore left-hander threw a season-high 87 pitches against Xavier on Saturday and gave up three hits, while striking out 10 batters in five innings to record the win to go 2-0 on the season so far.
Jump displayed command of his pitchers and when got a little tight, he buckled down, striking out all three batters on three pitches he faced with a runner in scoring position.
Where does Jay Johnson stand on LSU's outfielders?
Seven different players saw playing time against Xavier over the weekend. Seems like Johnson was searching for a spark at the dish as several players have hit a wall offensively of late.
The group went 5-for-30 during the Xavier series with sophomore Ethan Frey tallying the most hits out of the group. Frey finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs on Saturday playing left-field, but he got hit in the third inning sliding back into first on a pick attempt.
Struggles from players like Paxton Kling, who has played in centerfield for the majority of the first 16 games and has been batting in the leadoff spot, and returner Josh Pearson went a combined 1-for-10 this weekend has forced Johnson into some musical chairs in the outfield.

LSU Tigers led in hitting by a freshman
With the likes of Hayden Travinski and Tommy White in the lineup, predicting a freshman would be LSU's leading hitter after the first month of the season would've been impossible.
But that's what transpired.
Freshman infielder Steven Milam has announced his presence among the big guns of LSU's lineup in the early going in 2024.
Milam is batting .389 in 15 games played with a team-high 21 hits. His 16 runs rank second on the team and his 13 RBIs are tied for third. Johnson has raved about Milam, saying he's one of the typical guys he always looks to recruit and bring in. Early on, Milam has been a hit.
