Los Angeles Kings First-Rounder Dominating The OHL To Start The Season

We are four weeks through the OHL season and the headlines you can pull in the early going are plentiful.

One of those headlines is the resurgence of the Windsor Spitfires.

The Spitfires were not very good last year. They finished with a record of 18-42-5-3, allowing the most goals (360) and ending their season on a 13-game losing streak.

On the positive side, their awful season netted them the first overall pick and selected the mammoth 16-year-old Ethan Belchetz. The 6-foot-5 winger has gotten off to a very strong start.

The other positive for the organization was seeing their captain go in the first round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft Liam Greentree after putting up 90 points in 64 games. He had 24 more points than second place (Ryan Abraham with 66) on his team.

The Oshawa, Ontario native was selected 26th overall by the Los Angeles Kings and is quickly showing the hockey world why he was a first-round talent.

Greentree leads the OHL in assists with 17 and points with 23, in only nine games I may add. He has points in every game and has contributed to 42% of Windsor's 54 goals this season.

The Spitfires sit on top of the OHL overall standings with 17 points and a record of 8-1-1. Their 54 goals are the most and have the highest powerplay percentage at 34.2%. A lot of their offense has to do with what the Kings' top prospect is doing out there on the ice.

There are very few players in junior hockey at the moment who are more talented and have better hands than Greentree. He's an electrifying player with eye-popping moves that create open ice for his teammates. That's the first aspect of his playmaking ability.

The next aspect is his terrific vision. Before retrieving the puck, he's already scanned the ice to see where his passing options are. If he doesn't like what he sees, he'll hold onto the puck while using his massive 6-foot-3, 216-pound frame to protect the puck.

In nine games this season, Greentree has recorded seven multi-point games, including registering three assists in three of them.

While his stats line shows him to be a true-and-through playmaker, the Kings prospect can also be a dangerous scorer, due to his hunger and ambition to drive in between the dots and work himself into scoring areas with the puck.

He always has the puck. If you want a winger who can drive the play and offense, watch number 66 on Windsor and what he does.

Greentree can effectively cycle the puck and maintain a possession style in the offensive zone due to his size and strong puck control close to his body. However, he won’t stay near the perimeter for long, often making quick cuts toward the middle.

He has started to form strong chemistry alongside Washington Capitals 2024 third-rounder Ilya Protas, and the two big forwards have been wreaking havoc on OHL teams to start the season.

There's no slowing down the Los Angeles Kings first-rounder at the moment, and his incredible performance to start 2024-25 has most likely caught the eyes of Hockey Canada for the upcoming 2025 World Juniors tournament.
