Looking back at 8 quarterbacks picked by Broncos early in NFL draft

This weekend, Bo Nix will become the first rookie quarterback to start in Week 1 for the Denver Broncos since John Elway in 1983. Nix will also become Denver's 14th starting quarterback in the post-Peyton Manning era.

How have other Broncos quarterbacks drafted by the team fared during their careers with Denver? We take a look back at QBs picked by the club in the first three rounds of the NFL draft.

1. 2024 (1st round): Bo Nix

Drafted 12th overall in the 2024 NFL draft.

Won a three-way quarterback battle for the starting job, beating out Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson.

Will start Week 1 of the 2024 season.

2. 2019 (2nd round): Drew Lock

Drafted in 2nd round of 2019 NFL draft (42nd overall pick).

Played in 24 career games with Broncos, starting 21 of them (8-13-0 overall record).

Denver Broncos stats: 421-of-720 for 4,740 yards, 59.3 percent completion rate, 25 touchdowns, 20 interceptions and 13 fumbles.

Was traded to the Seattle Seahawks as part of the Russell Wilson deal before 2022 season.

3. 2016 (1st round): Paxton Lynch

Selected in the first round of 2016 NFL draft (26th overall) out of Memphis

Played in five games for Broncos, starting four (1-3-0 overall record) in two seasons.

Denver Broncos stats: 79-of-128 for 792 yards, 61.7 percent completion rate, four touchdowns, four interceptions and 18 sacks.

Was released by Broncos before 2018 season. Played in three other professional football leagues (CFL, USFL, XFL), where he also failed to live up to his high expectations.

4. 2012 (2nd round): Brock Osweiler

Selected by Broncos in 2nd round of 2012 NFL draft (57th overall)

Once thought to be the heir-apparent to Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. Started seven games during 2015 Super Bowl season (5-2 in 2015).

Denver Broncos stats: Played in 27 games, starting 11 in two stints with Broncos (2012-'15; 2017), 283-of-477 for 3,214 yards, 59.3 percent completion rate, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

After an impressive 2015 campaign, Osweiler signed a four-year $72 million contract with the Houston Texans, where he was the worst non-rookie quarterback in 2016. Houston dumped his contract to the Cleveland Browns after only one year. Osweiler lost another three-way battle for the starting job between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch in 2017.

5. 2010 (1st round): Tim Tebow

Selected in the 1st round of the 2010 NFL draft (25th overall).

A true fan-favorite to this day, Tebow led the Broncos on a miraculous 7-3 run through the last half of the 2011 season to reach the AFC divisional round of the playoffs.

Denver Broncos stats: 23 games played with 14 games started (8-6 record), 167-of-353 for 2,383 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

6. 2006 (1st round): Jay Cutler

Selected in the first round (11th overall) of the 2006 NFL draft.

Started in all 37 games (17-20 overall record) he played in as a Denver Bronco. Was selected by Ring of Fame coach Mike Shanahan, but had a falling out with then-head coach Josh McDaniels, and was traded to Chicago before the 2009 season.

Denver Broncos stats: 762-of-1,220 for 9,024 yards, 54 touchdowns and 37 interceptions.

7. 1998 (3rd round): Brian Griese

Selected in 3rd round (91st overall) in 1998 NFL draft.

Had the very difficult task of trying to fill Hall of Famer John Elway's shoes.

Played in 53 games (starting 51, with a 27-24-0 overall record) over five years during his Denver tenure.

Denver Broncos stats: 1,044-of-1,678 for 11,763 yards, 71 touchdowns and 53 interceptions.

8. 1992 (1st round): Tommy Maddox

Selected in first round (25th overall) in the 1992 NFL draft.

His tenure in Denver was by far the shortest of these highlighted quarterbacks. He only played in four games, starting all four (0-4 overall record).

Denver Bronco stats: 67-of-122 for 758 yards, six touchdowns and nine interceptions.
