Take a look at the top wrestling teams in the Bucks County area
Change has come quickly to the wrestling team dual-meet rankings as what we thought in the preseason rankings did not come to fruition once the matches started.
It's what helps keep things interesting.
We do have the same team in the top spot (Faith Christian) that we had before things got going, but after that, there is plenty of shuffling.
Here we go:
1. Faith Christian (1-4)
Don't let the record fool you. When the Lions are at full strength, with two defending PIAA Class 2A champions (Gauge Botero and Adam Waters), a host of other returning PIAA medalists, and unbeaten freshman phenom Joey Bachmann in the lineup, watch out. This team ran away with the PIAA Class 2A team title last season in Hershey and will likely do the same again.
2. Council Rock South (4-0)
The Golden Hawks were ranked fourth in the preseason, but impressive early wins over then No. 2 Pennridge and then No. 3 Quakertown moved them up in a hurry. The addition of Anthony Mutarelli, a junior, who spent his first two seasons at Malvern Prep (where he won a National Prep title as a freshman), gives South another hammer in its lineup and a potential state champ.

3. Pennridge (10-3)
There aren't many holes in this lineup and the Rams, who have already gone to a couple of dual-meet tournaments, are really tough up top, which is not usually the case for many teams. Pennridge's 43-24 win over Quakertown last month, which included six falls, was pretty good stuff.
4. Quakertown (1-2)
The Panthers are under .500 but won't stay there for long. The losses came against Council Rock South and Pennridge and the wins are coming. This is a solid team and the trio of junior Collin Gaj (a defending PIAA Class 3A champ), and seniors Mason Ziegler (a PIAA Class 3A runner-up last season) and Calvin Lachman (a two-time PIAA Class 3A qualifier) can keep the Panthers in any match. Those three are a combined 344-54 in their careers.
5. Conwell-Egan (3-0)
The Eagles have already won the Rough Rider tournament at Catasauqua High, the Sam Lovello Classic tournament at Brandywine Heights High and placed second at the 51-team MyHouse Trojan Wars at Chambersburg High. That's nicely done for any program, let alone a Class 2A one like the Eagles.
Others to watch: Council Rock North, Neshaminy, Pennsbury.
Worth noting
All five of our top five (along with CR North) will be competing at the nasty Escape The Rock tournament at CR South this weekend. Now, individual tournaments like the ETR are different from dual meets, obviously, but it will be interesting to see what happens. All told, 63 teams, from nine states, will compete in the 18th annual event. Win here, and you're more than legit. The finals and consolations for third and fifth place begin at 2 p.m. Sunday.
