Look: Clutch Cole Messina homer helps South Carolina baseball beat James Madison

Having intentionally walked him twice in the opening game of the Raleigh Regional, James Madison's scouting report on South Carolina baseball probably said something approximating the following: Don't let Cole Messina beat you.

The Dukes followed that scouting report for 26 outs.

Then Messina stepped up to the plate with a runner on first, and the Gamecocks down two runs with two outs in the ninth.

James Madison pitched to him. Messina made them pay.

The All-SEC catcher launched a game-tying, two-run shot over the left-field wall at Doak Field, sending the game into extra innings, where South Carolina won, 8-7.

The longball marked a continuation of an already outstanding postseason for Messina, who went deep four times in Hoover to help carry USC to the semifinals of the SEC Tournament, where it eventually fell to LSU.
