Replay: Heartbreaking loss to Texas A&M has Texas Longhorns on brink of NCAA elimination

COLLEGE STATION — After losing a late lead on Saturday night, Texas will have to rally to save its season.

Texas A&M scored twice in the 11th inning of 4-2 win over the rival Longhorns at Blue Bell Park. With the victory, Texas A&M (46-13) seized control of the College Station regional and is just one win away from advancing to a super regional. The Aggies will play either Louisiana (41-19) or Texas (36-23) at 7 p.m. on Sunday night.

If Texas A&M is beaten on Sunday, it will get another chance the following day to keep its season alive.

Meanwhile, a Texas team that held an eighth-inning lead over the Aggies will need to win twice on Sunday and once again on Monday in order to advance in the NCAA tournament. The Longhorns first must face Louisiana at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. One more loss ends UT’s season.

Here is a recap of what happened in what was an instant classic in this 382-game rivalry series:

End 9: Texas A&M 2, Texas 2

After the Longhorns were retired in order in the ninth inning, Texas and Texas A&M will attempt to settle things in extra innings. Texas senior Andre Duplantier II will enter this game in relief of Gage Boehm, who pitched the last four innings for Texas. Duplantier threw 2 ⅔ innings of one-hit relief in Friday's 12-5 win over Louisiana.

This season, Texas is 1-2 in games decided in extra innings. Texas A&M is 3-0.

Mid 9: Texas A&M 2, Texas 2

Mid 8: Texas A&M 2, Texas 2

Two errors by Jalin Flores proved to be costly in the eighth inning. To lead off the inning, Flores made a nice stop on a hard-hit baseball by Braden Montgomery, but the sophomore shortstop's rushed throw to first base was wild. Montgomery later scored from third base after Flores fielded a two-out grounder but again committed a throwing error to first base.

Texas is six outs away from seizing control of the College Station regional. Ahead of the seventh inning, Gage Boehm struck out two batters and got a flyout to left field. He will face the heart of the Texas A&M lineup in the eighth inning.

End 6: Texas 2, Texas A&M 1

Texas designated hitter Kimble Schuessler is having a nice weekend in College Station. The one-time Texas A&M signee doubled twice and reached base in five of his six at-bats during UT's regional-opening win over Louisiana on Friday. Against his old team tonight, Schuessler has doubled and homered. His solo shot in the sixth inning has given the Longhorns a slim lead.

Gage Boehm remains on the mound for Texas. In the top of the sixth inning, Boehm stranded an Aggie on third base with a strikeout of Caden Sorrell.

After failing to score in the fifth inning, Texas has made a pitching change and replaced Lebarron Johnson Jr. with Gage Boehm. In arguably his best start of the season, Johnson allowed two hits, three walks and one run while striking out eight batters.

Boehm is 5-3 with a 2.74 ERA and eight saves this season. Boehm originally joined the Texas A&M baseball program after he graduated from Hutto High in 2020, but he transferred after his first semester in College Station.

Mid 5: Texas A&M 1, Texas 1

Texas A&M outfielder Caden Sorrell led off the fifth inning with a game-tying homer, but Lebarron Johnson likely capped his outing with the biggest pitch of the night. With two runners in scoring position and two outs, Johnson caught Braden Montgomery looking for his eighth strikeout of the game. Montgomery's 81 RBIs lead the Texas A&M offense.

Through five innings, Johnson has allowed two hits and issued three walks. He has thrown 103 pitches.

End 3: Texas 1, Texas A&M 0

Texas A&M starter Ryan Prager entered this game having allowing 62 hits over 79 innings this season. Texas has gotten a hit off of Prager in each of tonight's three innings, but Jared Thomas' first-inning homer is the only swing that has led to a run so far.

Texas A&M has yet to get a hit against Lebarron Johnson Jr., but the Texas starter has had to work to keep the Aggies off the scoreboard. Johnson has already thrown 53 pitches and he has reached a full count against four batters.

End 2: Texas 1, Texas A&M 0

Texas had a chance to add to its lead in the second inning after former Texas A&M signee Kimble Schuessler got to third base with one out. Texas A&M starter Ryan Prager recorded a strikeout and induced a groundout from the bottom of the UT batting order to get out of the jam.

The party has started in College Station. Facing UT right-hander Lebarron Johnson Jr., Texas A&M struck out twice and drew a walk in the first inning. Johnson needed 22 pitches to get through the inning.

The capacity at Blue Bell Park is listed at 6,100, but tonight's announced attendance will far exceed that number. Even though the Longhorns are the designated home team for tonight's game, Texas will get a taste of what life with be like as the road team in the SEC.

Starting pitchers announced for Saturday showdown

Texas coach David Pierce will hand the baseball to right-handed pitcher Lebarron Johnson Jr. (3-4, 5.88 ERA) tonight. Meanwhile, Texas A&M will turn to left-hander Ryan Prager (8-1, 2.51).

Johnson has started on the Blue Bell Park mound before. Johnson pitched the first three innings of the Longhorns' 5-2 win in College Station last year, and he was the pitcher of record in what was a designated start. Johnson allowed two hits and a run, and his evening also featured two strikeouts, one walk and two wild pitches.

A second-team selection on the SEC honor roll this season, Prager has never faced Texas before.

Texas, Texas A&M both win regional openers

Texas and Texas A&M both opened their appearances in the 2024 NCAA baseball tournament with wins on Friday. No other Division I team has posted more than seven shutouts.

Texas, the regional's third seed, overcame an early deficit on Friday in a 12-5 win over second-seeded Louisiana. The Longhorns were led by sophomore shortstop Jalin Flores, who hit his third grand slam of the season. Texas designated hitter Kimble Schuessler reached base five times in the victory.
