Lions coach Dan Campbell shares why he's been a Baker Mayfield 'fan from afar'

Baker Mayfield is enjoying a comeback season.

After playing for four teams in the past three seasons, the former OU quarterback has led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to an NFC divisional road game against the Detroit Lions at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Mayfield has established himself as a starting-level quarterback. But he already had respect from those around the league prior to his comeback, including Detroit head coach Dan Campbell.

Campbell shared a story during a press conference Wednesday about his time as the tight ends coach for the New Orleans Saints, who worked out former OU tight end Mark Andrews prior to the 2018 NFL Draft. Mayfield accompanied Andrews and threw for him during the workout.

That said a lot about Mayfield, who ultimately went No. 1 overall to the Cleveland Browns in that same draft. According to Campbell, Mayfield threw for all of his OU teammates who went pro that year despite having private workouts of his own.

"I've always been a Baker fan from afar," Campbell said. "There's no wonder why people rally around him and follow him because he's that type of teammate.

"There's a lot of guys who wouldn't do that. 'Oh, I've got to save my arm. I've got so and so club coming in.' That wasn't him. You can respect stuff like that."

Mayfield is playing his best football this season with Tampa Bay, which signed him on March 15.

He boasts career highs of 4,044 passing yards, 29 total touchdowns and a completion percentage of 64.3%. The Buccaneers (10-8) have also won six of their last seven games.

And on Sunday, Mayfield will look to lead Tampa Bay to its second conference championship appearance in the last four seasons.
