Football truly won last night. Spain, the best team in the European Championship, beat England by a 2-1 scoreline to claim their fourth title in the event’s history. Later in the night, Lionel Messi secured his second Copa America title with Argentina.

For a player once criticized for his performance at the international level, Messi has responded impressively. He now has two Copa Americas and a FIFA World Cup title to his name, while also winning one Finalissima.

Most Decorated Player in History

The achievement of winning the most titles in the history of the game, until yesterday, was with Barcelona legend Dani Alves.

With two Copa Americas, three UCL titles, three FIFA Club World Cups, six La Liga titles amongst others, the right-back had 44 titles to his name.

Messi, with his latest Copa America win, has officially overtaken his former teammate. The Argentine ace now has 45 titles to his name and is the most decorated player in the history of the game.

Of his 45 trophies, 39 have come at the club level and six with Argentina. 34 of his titles are from his time at Barcelona, while he won four with Paris Saint-Germain and one with Inter Miami.

Needless to say, it is only fitting that the best player in history is the one with the most titles.

A special clash ahead

Argentina’s Copa America win was special in many ways, especially with it being the final appearance with the national team for Angel Di Maria.

Messi, as it stands, will continue with the National Team and will likely feature with the Albiceleste in the Finalissima clash against Spain.

The game against Luis de La Fuente’s side will be a spectacle to witness, especially with both teams in stunning form. The prospect of Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal sharing the field together makes it all the more special.

A win for Argentina in the Finalissima, moreover, will help Messi further increase his tally to 46 titles, clearly ahead of the competition. It’s likely he will remain the most decorated player in history for years to come.
