Lakers' Anthony Davis now out indefinitely with stress injury in foot

There is no longer a timeframe for Anthony Davis’ return.

The Los Angeles Lakers ruled Davis out indefinitely with a stress injury in his right foot on Friday. He was initially expected to miss a month.

Davis appeared to injure his foot against the Denver Nuggets last Friday. After finishing a layup against Denver star Nikola Jokic, Davis came up hopping without putting any weight on his right foot.

He hasn’t played since.

While the indefinite designation is concerning, the pain in Davis’ foot has apparently subsided in the past several days, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Davis is expected to rest his foot for another week or so before having it re-evaluated.

At this point, per Wojnarowski, the Lakers believe a procedure is still avoidable.

Davis has averaged 27.4 points and 12.1 rebounds per game this season. He was averaging more than 40 points in his past five games before going down, and was instrumental in helping the Lakers rebound to 13-18 after their awful 2-10 start to the season.

The Lakers will have to find a way to win without him, something they struggled to do last season. The team went 16-27 last season when Davis was out with MCL and right ankle injuries, and L.A. has lost two of three without him since beating the Nuggets.

The Lakers will host the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday night, their fourth game without Davis, before traveling to Dallas to take on the Mavericks on Christmas Day.
