KU's Lance Leipold: Lawrence Arnold, Calvin Clements to miss rest of spring due to injury

LAWRENCE — Kansas football coach Lance Leipold spoke Tuesday as the Jayhawks continued through spring ball practices, describing the overall health of the team as fair at best.

Leipold, of course, would like it to be healthier. But he understands this is part of it.

Sometimes the way a team works its way into spring ball plays a factor, and sometimes it’s bad luck. But overall Leipold appeared optimistic, noting that when some guys are unavailable that provides opportunities for others.

“Lawrence Arnold’s done for the spring,” Leipold said. “Devin Neal misses more than half the practices with class — we have like eight guys that leave that way. Calvin Clements will be out for the rest of the spring. … Jereme Robinson hasn’t practiced, that was a cleanup surgery from the season.”

Arnold, a senior wide receiver, and Robinson, a senior defensive end, are two veterans who’ve played a lot of football at Kansas. So, as long as they are able to get healthy enough in time to prepare for the season opener in the fall, this shouldn’t be cause for concern. Clements’ unavailability, though, is unfortunate for an offensive line still trying to figure out who’s going to start for the Jayhawks in the fall.

Clements, a redshirt freshman, is someone who could have been in contention at left tackle. Add in the fact senior offensive lineman Bryce Cabeldue is practicing, but not completely all the time. That’s two potential contributors — Cabeldue a multi-year starter at right tackle — who aren’t at full strength right now. It might not be until fall camp that Kansas can truly form what it feels will be its top eight guys — five starters and three key reserves.

At cornerback, senior Cobee Bryant is someone whose injury status was also discussed Tuesday. He’s one part of the Jayhawks’ star duo there, along with senior Mello Dotson. But Leipold noted that Bryant will be fine.
