KU women’s basketball releases non-conference schedule for upcoming season, plus more news

LAWRENCE — Kansas women’s basketball released its non-conference schedule for the upcoming season on Monday.

After an exhibition against Washburn on Nov. 1 at home, the regular season opener is Nov. 6 against Lindenwood. The schedule continues with games against Sam Houston State (Nov. 11, home), Omaha (Nov. 13, home), North Alabama (Nov. 17, home) and Iowa (Nov. 20, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota), before a trio of games in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Those three games are from Nov. 28-30, against Pittsburgh, Northern Iowa and Auburn.

The month of December includes three more home games against Wichita State (Dec. 5), Kansas City (Dec. 11) and Penn State (Dec. 15). The Jayhawks are looking to build off of a second NCAA tournament appearance in three seasons. The team is led by a duo of guards in sophomore S’Mya Nichols and fifth-year Wyvette Mayberry, as well as others.

Kansas soccer is represented in 2024 Paris Olympics

There are numerous athletes associated with KU’s track and field program who are competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, but it’s not the only Jayhawks sport that is represented this year. The Kansas soccer program is a part of it as well. Former KU athlete Liana Salazar is competing for Colombia.

Kansas women’s golf releases 2024-25 schedule

Kansas women’s golf’s schedule for the upcoming season is now available online. The fall portion starts off with the Folds of Honor Collegiate from Sept. 9-11 in the state of Michigan, and includes the Marilynn Smith Invitational in Lawrence. The spring begins with the Match in the Desert on Jan. 27 in the state of Arizona, ahead of more competitions and the postseason.

“We are very excited for our schedule this season,” KU head coach Lindsay Kuhle said in a Jayhawks release. “We are playing in seven different states all over the country and this experience will guide us to play our best golf this postseason. It is our goal to prepare our players through competition and experience on a variety of championship courses for postseason play.”

Multiple Kansas football players land on preseason watch lists

There’s a lot of enthusiasm around the upcoming Kansas football season, and for good reason. Redshirt junior quarterback Jalon Daniels and senior running back Devin Neal are both on the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, which is awarded to the top player in college. Redshirt senior long snapper Luke Hosford is on the preseason watch list for the Patrick Mannelly award, which is awarded to the best long snapper at the FBS level.

Former KU director of athletics, Bob Marcum, dies at 87 years old

Bob Marcum, KU’s director of athletics from 1978-82, died in July. According to a Jayhawks release, he spent more than 40 years in college athletics as an administrator. He was 87 years old.
