KU Athletics announces $10 million commitment for Gateway District from Horejsi family
LAWRENCE — KU Athletics’ continued fundraising efforts for the Gateway District project received a boost Thursday, with the announcement of a $10 million commitment.
According to a KU release, the Horejsi family is stepping up to support the endeavor. It’s a family with multiple generations of Jayhawks who’ve long supported the university in both academics and athletics. One example in athletics is the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.

“I am proud to have my children and grandchildren join me in committing to this gift that will make a difference across KU,” Stewart Horejsi said in the release. “It's important to us and to so many other Jayhawks.”
Travis Goff, Kansas’ director of athletics, added: “An ambitious project and vision require ambitious supporters” Goff said. “The Horejsi and Ciciora families are precisely that and have heeded the call to invest in the future of our University and Kansas Athletics. This is a family of remarkable Jayhawks and even better people and we are exceptionally grateful for their profound support.”
The Gateway District project will look to provide a new look to the North side of campus. There is the massive renovation underway of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and the football program’s facility. There is also the plan to put in a hotel and must-use spaces for conferences.
The football program will be playing its home games in 2024 away from Lawrence, due to the renovation. The non-conference games will be at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, while the Big 12 Conference games will be at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. However, while the second phase of the project will still need to be done, the football team will be able to return to Lawrence for the 2025 season.
“The Horejsi family's support turned our volleyball venue into a world-class arena for our student-athletes and fans, and this latest commitment will have a similar impact on not just our football program, but the entire university through the Gateway District,” Douglas Girod, KU’s chancellor, said in the release. “We are grateful for their continued investment in the University of Kansas.”
