'I knew it was over': DJ Dill leads Caddo past Okay for first Class A basketball title

DJ Dill caught the ball on the fast break and knew exactly what he was going to do.

“I just had to yam it,” Dill said.

The athletic junior guard from Caddo sprinted down the floor. Dill, with no one near him, rose and threw down a powerful two-handed slam.

But he wasn't finished.

Before Okay could get set into their offense, Dill was off and running with the ball again. This time, Dill finished with a right-handed slam that brought the Caddo bench and fans to their feet.

Dill looked to his sideline and motioned his arms up and down for the Bruins to get even louder. Two dunks in the final minute. That was the exclamation point.

“I knew it was over right there,” Kolby Benhardt said.

As Caddo and Okay battled it out, one team was going to walk away with its first basketball state championship. Dill and the Bruins made sure it was them.

Caddo knocked off Okay 58-51 as it made school history Saturday at State Fair Arena.

Caddo coach Kolby Johnson leads the boys and girls teams and had two tries at the school's first basketball state championship Saturday. The last time this happened was Depew's Gordon Garner in 2004 when the boys team won, just as Johnson was able to accomplish. Fort Towson’s Tom Heidebrecht won both in 1972.

“My buddy texted me when I lost the first one,” Johnson said with a smile. “They were giving me a hard time, saying, ‘You’re going to lose your job.’ But one out of two ain’t bad.”

Okay has been known for its defensive pressure all season, while Caddo is one of the better offensive teams, led by Dill. The teams went back and forth, trading baskets in the first half. It wasn’t until the third quarter that Caddo was able to build a substantial lead.

Although Caddo (24-2) made just one 3-pointer in the first half, the shots began to fall in the second.

In the third quarter, Dill made a layup through traffic before Kale Brister knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers. Carson Culbreath added a 3-pointer of his own before Parker Bearden made a layup. Dill finished with a fast break layup to go up by 14 points with about three minutes to play in the third. It wasn’t until two and a half minutes were left in the quarter before Okay’s Chase Clark broke the run with a 3-pointer.

“I thought we were fortunate to have a lead in the first half,” Johnson said. “Because we missed so many wide-open 3-pointers, I thought we really moved the ball well and got the ones that we wanted and they didn’t go in. In the second half, I told them you’re just going to have to go out there and shoot the same shots… We shot the same shots and we got some of them to go down.”

Okay (26-3) was able to close the gap, bringing the game to within four points with the help of Diezel Davis (12), Tito Ramos (12), Ashton Walters (8) and Duckee Swimmer’s (6) shooting. But Caddo never gave the lead back.

Dill finished with 23 points, followed by Benhardt with 12 and Culbreath, who had nine.

Dill's final two slams are scores he'll never forget.

“I just knew I needed to do something to get the energy up," Dill said. "I felt like my team was getting tired, so get the crowd into it, get a little more energy into all of us and finish this thing out.”
