Kim Mulkey, LSU women's basketball land guards from transfer portal
LSU women's basketball announced the addition of three transfer portal players Wednesday afternoon.
Guard trio Mjralce Sheppard from Mississippi State, Miami guard Shayeann Day-Wilson and former Arizona guard Kailyn Gilbert have signed to play for Kim Mulkey and the Tigers.
After the departures of star Angel Reese to the WNBA and point guard Hailey Van Lith, freshmen guards Janae Kent and Angelica Velez all to the portal, fans have been waiting with bated breath for the coaching staff to make its pursuits from the transfer portal known. LSU advanced to the Elite Eight this season when it lost to eventual national runner-up Iowa and Caitlin Clark.
Between Gilbert and Day-Wilson, LSU has added 388 career assists, significantly increasing the quality of point guard play for the Tigers heading into the 2024-25 season to go along with returner Last-Tear Poa and incoming freshman Jada Richard.
Sheppard is the youngest of the three new guards for LSU but had a solid freshman campaign, including a strong performance in Mississippi State's upset win over LSU.
The additions of Sheppard, Gilbert and Day-Wilson brings LSU's transfer portal class up to four players thus far. The first was former Arkansas combo player Jersey Wolfenbarger, who committed to play for Mulkey and the Tigers in March. There is still room for LSU to bring in another transfer or two.

Kailyn Gilbert, point guard
Gilbert played two seasons at Arizona where the taller guard, at 5-foot-8, became an integral part of the Wildcats' offense. She earned more playing time during her sophomore season in 2023-24 and Gilbert was able to display plenty of scoring prowess, posting more than 15 points per game. How her time in Tucson ended does beg some questioning as she was dismissed from the team before season's end.
With two years of running point at the college level, in a league that's been heavy on stellar guard play in the Pac-12, the Tigers are getting a guard that has seen it all on both ends of the floor, something LSU's depleted backcourt needs. But her defense does need work.
Gilbert, a former No. 31 rated player in the 2022 recruiting class, averaged 2.3 assists this season and had six 20-point games.
Shayeann Day-Wilson, point guard
Shiftiness, ability to finish over taller post players and a solid ball-handler, Day-Wilson is an important pickup for Mulkey and LSU.
What Day-Wilson, at 5-6, may lack in size, she makes up for by getting her teammates involved while knowing how to create separation when she's off the ball to get herself quality looks at the basket. The former 2022 ACC Freshman of the Year at Duke was Miami's leading scorer last year, averaging 11.9 points per game while making 41.4% of her shots.
She finished the season with 110 assists and through three seasons in college, she's posted 300 assists.
Mjracle Sheppard, guard
Sheppard dropped 12 points, her second-highest output for her freshman season in Starkville, on LSU this season. She went 6-of-9 from the field while collecting five assists and four rebounds for an all-around performance that impressed Mulkey and the LSU coaching staff.
The Kent, Washington, native didn't get as much playing time as she hoped with the Bulldogs, averaging just 17 minutes per game, but found success when she was on the floor.

Sheppard's game is multi-faceted and her 5-10 frame allows her to play around the entire perimeter, providing depth that LSU welcomes. One of Sheppard's biggest assets is she's played a season in the SEC and knows its level of physicality and style of play.
