Key dates and what to know as Texas Longhorns football begins summer practices
Summer workouts for one of Texas football's most anticipated seasons in recent history begins Wednesday at approximately 2:45 p.m. for the Longhorns. Practices are closed to the public although a handful of small windows will be open to the media.

Why practice in midday temperatures that are expected to soar close to 100 degrees? The Longhorns will be playing in that afternoon heat when they host Colorado State in the season opener Aug. 31 at 2:30 p.m. at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Head coach Steve Sarkisian wants to get his team ready for that scorcher of a season debut, which means Texas will hold a series of afternoon practices over the next few weeks.
After a week without pads, Texas will strap on what Sarkisian likes to call “the armor” early next week. The Longhorns will then hold a couple of intrasquad scrimmages closed to the public on the two Saturdays leading up to the Aug. 31 opener.
