Keon Coleman won't play for Michigan State basketball after all, sticking to football

Turns out Keon Coleman won’t be playing basketball after all this winter.

Coleman will stick with the Michigan State football team for offseason workouts and conditioning after spending the past week practicing with the Spartans, basketball coach Tom Izzo said in a statement Tuesday.

“Keon Coleman and I spoke at length this week and we came to the joint decision that it would be best for him to focus on his football career and not join the basketball team at this time,” Izzo said in a statement. “Keon had a great football season and it’s in his best interests to take the next few months to get ready for spring football, while also taking care of his academic obligations.”

Michigan State’s Keon Coleman warms up before the game against Northwestern on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022, at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

The announcement comes hours before MSU (9-4, 1-1) resumes Big Ten play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Nebraska at Breslin Center. Coleman was in uniform and went through warmups but did not play in Friday’s 89-68 home victory over Buffalo, the only player on the roster to not see action. He returned from Christmas to start working out with Izzo’s team Dec. 26.

After joining the basketball team in January last season, Coleman had five points, a rebound, three steals and three turnovers in 10 minutes spread over six games and remained with Izzo’s squad through the NCAA tournament.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound sophomore wide receiver had a breakout season for Mel Tucker’s football team in the fall. leading the Spartans with 58 catches for 798 yards and seven touchdowns before suffering a groin injury in the season-closing loss at Penn State on Nov. 26. Coleman earned third-team All-Big Ten by the league’s media and honorable mention from its coaches.

“I can’t thank Mel Tucker enough for his support of Keon and our basketball program. We recruited Keon together for both sports, and Mel was behind him trying to be a part of both programs,” Izzo said. “I love Keon and have such great admiration for him, but I also want what is best for him and his future. I’m glad we agreed that this was the best plan of action moving forward.”
