Stefan Wilson knocked out of Indy 500 with fractured vertebrae suffered in practice crash
INDIANAPOLIS – Stefan Wilson suffered a fractured vertebrae Monday afternoon when he and Katherine Legge crashed during Indianapolis 500 practice, the first incident on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval this month.
Wilson's team reported Monday night that he suffered a fracture of the 12th thoracic vertebrae and would be kept at IU Health Methodist Hospital overnight. He won't be able to drive in Sunday's race, and the team is considering its options.
Legge appeared to run into the back of Wilson entering Turn 1, sending both into the outside wall.
Safety crew members put Wilson on a stretcher and stabilized his neck before taking him to the hospital. He gave a thumbs up to the crowd. Legge left her car under her own power and was cleared to drive after being checked at the IMS infield care center.
Wilson, driving for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, qualified 25th.

"Cars in front were all checking up and I lifted as much as I could, downshift and hit the brakes, but it wasn't enough," Legge said after leaving the care center.
"It's another blow to the team, after yesterday," she added.
Legge qualified 30th for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, the best starting position for the struggling team. RLL team officials said they planned to repair Legge's crashed car in time for Friday's Carb Day practice.

Wilson's brother Justin was killed in a 2015 racing accident in an IndyCar race at Pocono.
Earlier Monday, Graham Rahal, RLL's lead driver who failed to make the race, said he would not try to take the ride of one of his teammates. RLL's race qualifiers are Legge, Christian Lundgaard (31st) and Jack Harvey (33rd), who bumped Rahal from the field at the last second in Sunday's qualifying.
"You've got to earn it here, and we didn't earn it," the veteran of 15 Indy 500s said. "I don't believe in that."
Will Power had the top practice lap at 229.222 mph, followed by Scott Dixon (229.184) and Takuma Sato (228.382). Pole-sitter Alex Palou was fourth at 227.392. Pato O'Ward expressed dissatisfaction with inconsistency between different tire sets, Rinus VeeKay's car sustained an electrical issue and David Malukas also reported mechanical issues.
Practice conditions were similar to what is forecast for Sunday's race: 80 degrees air temperature, 118 degrees on the track, partly cloudy skies and a light variable wind.
