Kansas to play four home games at Arrowhead Stadium due to Memorial Stadium renovation

Kansas football is taking its talents on the road for the 2024 football season, but not just due to away games.

Construction on the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium means all six home games will be played elsewhere in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Fans can gear up for an electrifying season at two iconic venues: Children's Mercy Park, home to MLS' Sporting Kansas City, will host the first two games, while the remaining four Big 12 Conference matchups against TCU, Houston, Iowa State, and Colorado will unfold at the legendary GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs.

While this temporary relocation might seem like a curveball, it comes with benefits. Fans can expect an enhanced gameday experience with improved amenities at the alternate venues, ensuring a memorable season even while Memorial Stadium undergoes its transformation. This strategic move also guarantees construction stays on schedule, paving the way for a triumphant return to the newly renovated stadium in 2025.

“This plan for the 2024 season has an incredible number of benefits for our student-athletes, our fans and supporters, our campus partners and the Kansas Football program,” said Kansas Director of Athletics Travis Goff. “While we are disappointed we can’t play in Lawrence, ultimately, we want to create the best possible experience for all involved, and playing two games at Children’s Mercy Park and four games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium allows us to do that. It has been a thrill to see construction begin in earnest in Lawrence on the Gateway District and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, and this decision allows that construction to continue on a necessary timeline while also benefiting the overall budget of the project and the 2024 fan experience.”

Jayhawk faithful can secure their spot for all six games with a full season ticket package starting at $275, or opt for a four-game package for the Arrowhead Stadium matches available later in the year. Single-game tickets will be offered closer to the season start. Kansas Athletics is also ensuring transportation and accommodations for students, with dedicated ticket allotments designed to match the usual Memorial Stadium experience.

Why is Kansas playing at Arrowhead Stadium in 2024?

The Jayhawks' home stadium of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is currently undergoing a major renovation project, including the construction of the Gateway District. This project requires the stadium to be unavailable for games during the 2024 season.

Playing at Arrowhead ensures that the construction project at Memorial Stadium stays on schedule and is completed in time for the 2025 season.

“We are excited for the unique opportunity to play our home games in the Kansas City metropolitan area in 2024,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod. “While we had hoped to play these games in Lawrence, the move to alternate venues is needed to ensure that our fans, student-athletes and all constituents have the best possible gameday experience and that we stay on schedule to complete construction for the 2025 season. We recognize this move is not ideal for some members of the Lawrence community, and we hope they will understand this is a necessary one-year move to ensure the Gateway District can begin benefitting Lawrence as soon as possible in 2025.”
