Kansas men’s golf senior Gunnar Broin qualifies for 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort

LAWRENCE — KU men’s golf is now set to have a pair of Jayhawks represent the program later this month at the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort.

Not only is there former Kansas golfer Gary Woodland, who has won the event in the past when it was held in 2019 at Pebble Beach. After advancing in a playoff during a qualifying event earlier this week, so, too, will Jayhawks senior Gunnar Broin. According to a KU release, Broin will be “the first active Kansas golfer in program history to tee it up in a PGA TOUR major championship” when he does.

“We’re really happy for Gunnar,” Jayhawks head coach Jamie Bermel said in the release. “I thought he was making really good progress this spring but didn’t quite have the results. I’m certain this validates his hard work and commitment to getting better. This is a great opportunity to play in one of the greatest golf events in the world on an unbelievable golf course.”

The 2024 U.S. Open will be held from June 13-16 in the state of North Carolina. Broin will arrive after spending the past couple of years competing for KU. His college career, which can extend one more season, started out at Colorado State.

During a video posted on the PGA TOUR University social media account on Instagram, Broin mentioned how crazy this all has been for him. It’s something he’s only dreamed about before. It’ll be exciting for him to be able to compete against some of the best golfers in the world.
