Kansas football releases depth chart for TCU game in Week 5

Kansas football head coach Lance Leipold analyzes TCU

Despite TCU’s own struggles early this season, Kansas head coach Lance Leipold highlighted the Horned Frogs had a chance to win at home against UCF and that things got away from them against SMU. It’s still a team that was able to go on the road and win against Atlantic Coast Conference-side Stanford. It’s still a team that isn’t that far removed from playing for a national championship two seasons ago.

Leipold praised the wide receivers and quarterback TCU has. He described that combination as the best the Jayhawks will have gone against so far this fall. He also noted Sonny Dykes is an excellent coach who can help get the Horned Frogs back on track.

Kansas football offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes previews TCU

Kansas football’s assistant head coach/offensive coordinator, Jeff Grimes, acknowledged the idea the Jayhawks would look to run the ball a lot against TCU comes from the Horned Frogs’ struggles against it the past two weeks. It’s not just that Kansas is averaging close to 240 yards per game on the ground, but that TCU is allowing an average of more than 260 yards per game on the ground in its losses against UCF and SMU. But Grimes noted the Jayhawks will adjust depending on the style the Horned Frogs play.

Grimes highlighted TCU’s pass rushers. He mentioned the Horned Dogs have intriguing pass-rush packages on third downs. He’s interested in seeing how his opponent plays in those situations.

Kansas football defensive coordinator Brian Borland discusses TCU

Kansas has had its issues with mobile quarterbacks in recent weeks, but defensive coordinator Brian Borland doesn’t see TCU’s quarterback as incorporating that as much into this game as others. Borland described him as someone who’ll more so look to stay in the pocket, keep his eyes down field and move around to buy time to throw. When the Horned Frogs look to go to run-pass option plays, Borland said TCU will largely hand the ball off or throw it.

Borland, like Leipold, praised the talent of the Horned Frogs’ wide receivers room. However, he’s also confident in anyone the Jayhawks will have to send out to cover them. He also highlighted Kansas has a number of guys in pass-rush situations who’ve been able to have moments who can pressure the quarterback.

Two Kansas football players talk TCU matchup

Kansas redshirt junior offensive lineman Bryce Foster, who’s started at center the first four games, said TCU’s defense has strong players in its front seven who like to hit and are mobile. He mentioned senior defensive lineman Tymon Mitchell is a transfer from Georgia, who has Southeastern Conference experience. Foster also noted senior defensive lineman Caleb Fox is someone he played with when he was in little league.

Kansas senior defensive tackle Caleb Taylor said he’s excited for the challenge of defending TCU’s offense, including what the Horned Frogs like to do with run-pass options and two they disguise plays. He acknowledged how important the Jayhawks’ pass rush will be. Although TCU’s desire to throw quick passes might not lead to the same pass rush statistics one might look for, he mentioned there are other ways they can affect the quarterback.

Prediction: Kansas 28, TCU 24

Kansas might not get the home-field advantage it would like at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, due to its struggles earlier this season. TCU is a talented opponent that will challenge the Jayhawks for a win in this Big 12 matchup. But Kansas has a running game that should allow it to control the time of possession and end its losing streak.
