How Kansas City Royals roster looks entering 2025, after return to playoff baseball

The Kansas City Royals head into the offseason with some momentum.

The Royals made significant strides with a 30-win improvement. KC clinched a postseason berth riding an 86-76 record and advanced to the American League Division Series.

Kauffman Stadium also hosted a postseason game for the first time since the 2015 campaign.

Now, the Royals will look to get better. The club may look to add more offensive firepower to its starting lineup. Royals general manager J.J. Picollo could also explore adding another veteran reliever to a resurgent bullpen.

The Royals have a few options to consider.

Here is a look at their 40-man roster heading into the MLB offseason:

Impending Royals free agents

  • 3B Paul DeJong (unrestricted)

  • 1B Yuli Gurriel (unrestricted)

  • UTIL Garrett Hampson (unrestricted)

  • OF Tommy Pham (unrestricted)

  • INF Robbie Grossman (unrestricted)

  • RHP Michael Lorenzen (unrestricted)

  • LHP Will Smith (unrestricted)

The Royals have several unrestricted free agents who will hit the open market this offseason. Michael Lorenzen headlines the group after being acquired from the Texas Rangers ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

KC veteran trio Yuli Gurriel, Tommy Pham and Garrett Hampson played key roles for manager Matt Quatraro. Will Smith added veteran leadership in the bullpen.

Players with options

  • OF Hunter Renfroe (player option)

  • RHP Michael Wacha (player option)

  • UTIL Adam Frazier (mutual option)

  • RHP Chris Stratton (player option)

A few Royals veterans could decide if they would like to return next season. Hunter Renfroe has a player option worth $7.5 million (including a $1 million buyout). Michael Wacha will mull over a $16 million player option.

Meanwhile, Chris Stratton has a $4.5 million player option for next season and Adam Frazier has a mutual option that is valued at $8.5 million (with a $2.5 million buyout).

There is a chance the Royals retain each player if they decide to opt in. KC could also re-sign these players to a new contract if they decide to decline the option and test free agency.
