ATLANTA — Kansas basketball had a chance to record another significant victory with a matchup Tuesday against Michigan State and delivered a 77-69 win.
The No. 1 Jayhawks faced Spartans in the Champions Classic, and prevailed in what at times was a back-and-forth affair. Head coach Bill Self and company had already beaten a ranked UNC squad this season, and now have a win against MSU head coach Tom Izzo’s program to add to the resume. The last time these two sides faced off was during the 2021-22 season, also in the Champions Classic, when Kansas won that matchup.
Here is what happened inside State Farm Arena:
Kansas basketball vs Michigan State prediction: 3 things to consider in Champions Classic
FINAL: Kansas 77, Michigan State 69
UPDATE: 8:25 p.m. (CT): Kansas leads 68-59 with 3:28 left in the 2nd half
Kansas recently saw AJ Storr foul out, but it hasn't hurt the Jayhawks too much. They're now leading by nine points with about three and a half minutes left in regulation. Hunter Dickinson is up to a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds.
Zeke Mayo hasn't scored much tonight for Kansas, but he does have nine rebounds and seven assists. Rylan Griffen is the only other Jayhawks player in double figures scoring, with 10 points. Time will tell if the Jayhawks can hold on.
UPDATE: 8:06 p.m. (CT): Kansas is tied 52-52 with 8:51 left in the 2nd half
After a 3-pointer from Michigan State, the score is all tied up at 52-52 with 8:51 left in regulation. The free-throw disparity between the two sides continues to be striking. MSU is 14-for-16 from the free-throw line, while Kansas is 5-for-9.
Something to watch for, is AJ Storr and Flory Bidunga are both playing with four fouls right now for Kansas. Although neither are starters, both have important roles in the Jayhawks' rotation. It would certainly be an issue if neither are able to finish the game.
UPDATE: 7:56 p.m. (CT): Kansas leads 45-43 with 11:37 left in the 2nd half
Once again, Kansas is fortunate to have Hunter Dickinson on its team. The Jayhawks' veteran center has 23 points so far tonight, in addition to eight rebounds. No one on either team has more than nine points.
So far, Kansas has led for more than 17 minutes of the game. Michigan State has only led for a bit more than four. But with less than 12 minutes left in regulation, the Spartans are right there in it.
UPDATE 7:46 p.m. (CT): Kansas leads 34-32 with 15:47 left in the 2nd half
Michigan State will have a chance to tie the score after this break, but for now Kansas holds a 34-32 lead with a little less than 16 minutes left in the second half. So far, the Spartans are 11-for-12 from the free throw line. The Jayhawks, on the other hand, are 2-for-6.
For how rough things have looked offensively for both sides, turnovers haven't been as significant of an issue as one might think. Kansas has scored four points off of eight Michigan State turnovers. Michigan State has scored no points off of six Kansas turnovers.

UPDATE: 7:09 p.m. (CT): Kansas leads 23-18 with 3:20 left in 1st half
Kansas' Hunter Dickinson is up to 15 points, and is the only player who's stepped on the court who's been able to reach double figures scoring so far. No one else has more than six points. He's also the only one to have made a 3-pointer so far.
Perhaps the Jayhawks can get some boost from Rakease Passmore? The freshman has yet to play tonight, but is checking in after this latest break. He has a lot of potential this season.
UPDATE: 7:02 p.m. (CT): Kansas is tied 14-14 with 7:05 left in 1st half
Both teams are shooting below 25% from the field right now. Neither team has hit a shot from behind the arc. Whatever spark either head coach is looking for in the first half, hasn't been found.
Kansas is lucky to have Hunter Dickinson. Dickinson has 10 points and is 5-for-6 from the field. The Jayhawks are going to need more than just him, though, to win this game.
UPDATE: 6:52 p.m. (CT): Michigan State leads 10-8 with 11:38 left in 1st half
Michigan State is on an 8-0 run now, but by no means does either team look any good right now. Shots just aren't falling. Neither team's offense looks like it has any rhythm at all.
After not playing at all last game, Zach Clemence has played some early minutes here for Kansas. Clemence redshirted last season. He shared the floor with Flory Bidunga while he was out there.
UPDATE: 6:40 p.m. (CT): Kansas leads 8-2 with 15:03 left in 1st half
Kansas, led by Hunter Dickinson, has an early six-point lead at the first timeout. Dickinson leads the way with eight points and three steals. He's 4-for-5 from the field so far.
To this point, the game has been a bit sloppy. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of energy in the arena. Time will tell if that remains true throughout the rest of the game.

Don't expect Shakeel Moore to play for Kansas
Self said Shakeel Moore is out. He said Rylan Griffen "has been battling some stuff. We're a little nicked up." Griffen is listed in the starting lineup with Mayo, Adams, Hunter Dickinson and Harris.
