Kansas basketball’s Johnny Furphy, Kevin McCullar Jr. will soon learn NBA draft fates
LAWRENCE — After weeks and months of speculation, prospects will learn their NBA draft fates this week.
The first round is Wednesday. The second round is Thursday. And there are two Kansas basketball players, Johnny Furphy and Kevin McCullar Jr., who are projected to hear their names called at one point or another.
But when are Furphy and McCullar most likely to be drafted? Does there seem to be a consensus on one going earlier than the other? Could both end up as first round picks?
Here are some of the latest projections from NBA mock drafts:
Johnny Furphy
CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish: 1st round, 19th overall
ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo: 1st round, 18th overall
Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman: 1st round, 27th overall
Furphy’s emergence as a freshman this past season provided a much-needed boost to a Kansas team that lacked depth. The guard played his way into the Jayhawks’ starting lineup and ended up starting 19 of the 33 games he appeared in.
Furphy finished the lone season of his college career averaging 9.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, as he shot 46.6% from the field, 35.2% from behind the arc and 76.5% from the free-throw line. His size and athleticism, not to mention room for development, make him an intriguing prospect for a NBA organization.
Kevin McCullar Jr.
CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish: 1st round, 25th overall
ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo: 2nd round, 38th overall
Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman: 2nd round, 34th overall
McCullar joined the Kansas program as a Texas Tech transfer ahead of the 2022-23 season as someone who fit KU well for what the Jayhawks try to do. During McCullar’s two years playing for coach Bill Self, McCullar showed considerable improvement offensively while remaining one of the best defensive talents in the country.
McCullar’s injury history could give some teams some pause, when it comes to how early they think it makes sense to pick him. However, his experience as a graduate senior guard this past season makes him someone a team should be able to rely on for minutes sooner rather than later.
