Kansas basketball coach Bill Self ejected during Jayhawks’ Big 12 loss against Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas — Kansas basketball coach Bill Self didn’t make it through the whole game Monday, as he was ejected during a 79-50 loss against Texas Tech.

Self’s ejection came in the second half with about six minutes remaining during the game between the No. 7 Jayhawks (19-6, 7-5 in Big 12) and Red Raiders (18-6, 7-4 in Big 12). The Big 12 Conference matchup was already decided by that point, so it didn’t have much of an effect on the outcome.

It’s the first time he has been ejected from a game this season.

“I didn’t curse him, I didn’t yell,” Self said postgame of his conversation with an official. “But I did say a magic word I guess, multiple times, that got me a couple technicals. I really wasn’t trying to get thrown out. But the way things went in the game — I honestly feel the game is not being called the way it needs to be called regardless of if it’s our favor or their favor. It makes no difference to me. I don’t feel like the game’s being officiated the way it’s intended to be officiated. So, that was frustration. But I’ve felt that all year.”

Self went on to add that the Big 12 has good officials, but he doesn’t see things the same way as they are being called. There’s more physicality, he explained, than years past. And he certainly isn’t the only Big 12 head coach who has had their issues with officials this season.

Self, though, noted that he hasn’t been talking to other head coaches in the league about his view. He said he doesn’t complain to other people about that sort to thing. He described it as a league-level situation.
