'I just kind of knew it': Ragan Smith does it again with rare back-to-back perfect 10 in OU's win vs. GW

NORMAN — When OU’s Ragan Smith stuck her dismount from the balance beam on Sunday, she wasn’t sure if it was good enough to earn her her first career perfect 10.

But when she landed on Friday in the Sooners’ meet against George Washington, there was no doubt.

“This 10 felt more deserved in my opinion,” Smith said. “I feel like I did the beam routine that I know how to do and that I’ve been showing every day in practice.

“I definitely felt really satisfied after I finished because I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be it.’ I just kind of knew it. So I was very confident and collected and I just went up there and nailed it.”

In No. 2 OU’s 197.425-194.925 win at Lloyd Noble Center, Smith became the third gymnast in program history to post back-to-back 10s in the same event.

Maggie Nichols did it twice — on vault in 2020 and balance beam in 2018. Olivia Trautman accomplished the feat on vault in 2020.

Nichols is the only other OU gymnast to record multiple 10s on the beam in one season.

“It’s difficult to see the same routine every week on any event. It’s just hard,” Sooners coach K.J. Kindler said of the consistency Smith has showed recently. “That’s definitely a mental toughness she’s kind of captured. She’s been really detail-oriented in the gym. She’s not allowing herself to make those mistakes in practice and when she does, she corrects them and does whatever extra she needs to do to make that happen.

“I just think she’s in a really unique place mentally. Balance beam’s her forte. She just owns it.”

Among the crowd to witness the 10 was OU football coach Brent Venables, who watched from the floor for the event, then took pictures with the team afterward.

Smith’s perfect score capped off a key run for the Sooners (7-1) after back-to-back falls on the beam put the Sooners in a precarious position — not for winning Friday’s meet but in the long-term picture.

Audrey Davis followed the falls with a 9.925 to tie her season high, Carly Woodard followed with a 9.950 and Smith closed it out with her 10 to give the Sooners a 49.075. It was OU’s lowest mark of the season in the event but a strong rebound after back-to-back falls.

“To score over a 49 counting a fall is a pretty awesome score actually but certainly not the score we’re wanting to have at the end of the day,” Kindler said. “Those last three, only gave away just .125 in deductions all three of them combined, that’s huge.”

Davis posted a career-high 39.625 in the all-around, earning a 9.900 in her other three events.

The Sooners also got a lift from the debut of Danielle Sievers, who suffered a foot injury before the season.

Sievers competed in the vault and the bars, with a 9.900 on each.

“She’s money,” Kindler said. “She’s coming to the floor lineup too. This preseason, I was earmarking her for an all-arounder, no doubt in my mind.

“She did a phenomenal job trying to stay in the best shape possible (while injured) … otherwise, this would not have been possible.”

Sievers didn’t work on vault landings on the meet surface until the week of her debut.

“I was excited to get out there and show people what I was capable of,” she said.

Kindler said Sievers might make her debut in the floor lineup as soon as Feb. 19 when the Sooners compete in the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth.

Trautman, who has missed this season with an injury, could return in that meet as well, potentially competing in the vault, bars and beam events.
