Josh Downs leaves Indianapolis Colts practice with injury
Former North Carolina Tar Heels wide receiver Josh Downs had an impressive rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023 and was expected to take a big jump in his second year. But on Wednesday, his progress may have hit a speed bump.
According to several reports, Downs left Wednesday's practice early for the Colts after suffering an injury. Stephen Holder of ESPN has the details on the play as Downs went down after a tackle and suffered an ankle injury. He did not put any weight on his lower leg as he had to be helped off the field.
Holder further went on to explain that this was during a 7-on-7 drill where there is no tackling but Nick Cross took him all the way to the ground on the play.
Colts WR Josh Downs, who’s had a great camp, was just tackled to the ground and came up with an apparent ankle injury. Had to helped off the field and did not put weight on the lower leg.
Not great.— Stephen Holder (@HolderStephen) August 7, 2024
Downs broke a Colts rookie record last season in his first year with the franchise despite quarterback Anthony Richardson missing most of the season with an injury. He was expected to be a primary target for Richardson this year as the Colts looked to take a step forward with their offense.
We should know more about Downs' injury in the coming days, potentially after practice. But I don't expect him to suit up in the team's preseason opener on Sunday afternoon.
