Josh Allen to play in preseason opener vs Bears. Here's why

For those of you who are attending the Buffalo Bills preseason opener Saturday afternoon at Highmark Stadium, Sean McDermott served up some good news.

The starters on both sides of the ball will play, including quarterback Josh Allen.

“Yes, that includes Josh,” McDermott said Thursday morning before the Bills conducted their final training camp practice at St. John Fisher University.

As for whether Allen would play in the other two preseason games, McDermott wasn’t ready to make that call, saying, “We’ll just take it one week at a time.” But then he certainly left the door open to that possibility because he acknowledged that Allen is working with a vastly different receiver corps this season, and the group might need some time on task in the preseason.

Why Josh Allen will play Saturday

Sean McDermott said the starters will play about a quarter Saturday, and that includes Josh Allen.

“There’s a number of new faces on our offense also, including his receiving corps and so some of that is baked into this,” McDermott said of the decision. “But the biggest thing is individually we’ve got to get ourselves ready to go and go from there.”

By all accounts, things have gone well for the offense in the two weeks they spent in Pittsford. Wednesday, offensive coordinator Joe Brady said he was very pleased with how Allen has looked throwing to so many new players, and McDermott doubled down on that opinion.

“I would agree,” he said. “Very focused and when you look at his throws and accuracy and whatnot, he’s been very accurate and sharp. There’s some plays that are newer and some time on task with the receiving corps, as I mentioned this is a new group this year. I would say that they’re still working through some things and that will continue.”

McDermott said playing the Bears is coming just in time because as is the case every year at this point in camp, the players are sick and tired of beating up on their teammates. It becomes monotonous, so seeing a different colored jersey across the line will be a welcome respite.

“We’re kind of getting to the point in training camp where, as you see, some of the skirmishes start to break out,” McDermott said. “Guys are getting a little ornery and it’s time to go against another opponent here. So we look forward to finishing today’s camp and today’s practice the right way, but also getting in front of our fans at home come this Saturday at 1 o’clock.”
