Josh Allen leads winning drive, Bills pick off nemesis Patrick Mahomes to seal revenge win
KANSAS CITY - The Kansas City Chiefs used exactly 13 seconds on their final fourth-quarter possession Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium.
Yes, not kidding.
Only this time, rather than kicking an inexplicable tying field goal to force overtime in a playoff game, Patrick Mahomes threw an interception to Taron Johnson that sealed the Buffalo Bills’ 24-20 victory.
Talk about sweet redemption for the Bills.

“Really? Oh, wow,” said defensive end A.J. Epenesa when he heard that little karmic nugget of information.”

“Well, that’s a great little statistic,” center Mitch Morse said with a smile.
Epenesa, Morse and the rest of the Bills could smile Sunday because while it won’t wipe away the travesty of what took place in January when they blew a lead and lost in the divisional round of the playoffs, beating their arch nemesis in their house sure felt just a little better than your average NFL victory.
“Obviously, it's great getting a road win against an opponent that's really good across the board, and there were still some bad memories from this place last year,” said tight end Dawson Knox, who caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Josh Allen with 1:04 left to play. “So it's kind of nice to wipe that off of our minds and to get a win and keep moving on, especially a win going into the bye week which makes everything nice.”
Here are some observations I had:
Josh Allen saved his best for last
On the possession before the winning drive, Allen took an 11-yard sack which forced the Bills to punt from their own 24 with 7:36 left, trailing 20-17. Not usually ideal, giving the ball back to Mahomes in that situation, but the Bills defense came up with a huge three-and-out, Von Miller sacking Mahomes on a third down, so Kansas City had to punt.
There was 5:31 on the clock when Allen trotted back out, and he proceeded to engineer a clutch drive that featured a fourth-down QB sneak, a big 18-yard completion to Stefon Diggs, and then a 16-yard Allen scamper on which he hurdled a defender.
That all led to maybe his best throw of the day, a 14-yarder to Knox who beat his man to the left side of the end zone.
“Josh threw a dime,” Knox said. “I got a corner route, Stef has a little option route underneath. The fun part about playing with a receiver like Stef is he's going to attract a lot of attention so it kind of leaves me one-on-one in some situations and I mean, Josh just put it to where no one else can get it.”
Allen was under duress in this game because the Chiefs defense blitzed him and also covered the Bills receivers better than expected given all the youth on the field. There were moments when things didn’t go well at all, but when it mattered, he was flawless.
Report card: Bills get redemption against Chiefs with better quarterback and Von Miller's impact

That was a big moment for Knox
The tight end endured a terrible tragedy during training camp when his younger brother died. Whether that has impacted his play on the field, that’s pretty tough to say, but Knox’s start this year - partially due to injury - has been stunted.
He came into the game with just 12 catches for 111 yards and no touchdowns and really not involved in the game plans at all. But on the biggest play of the game, he got open in the end zone and reeled in Allen’s perfect pass.
“You watch guys go through the journey of life off the field, and he's been through it,” coach Sean McDermott said. “He's stuck with it, stuck with it, been resilient, and then he's been banged up a little bit. You just knew his time was coming. You just knew he was going to make a big play and he did. My hat goes off to him.”
This is why the Bills paid Von Miller
Mahomes does such a great job of getting rid of the ball quickly when he’s pressured, or moving around in the pocket to extend plays, that I didn’t know if the Bills pass rush would be able to impact the game, but it did.
Miller had two sacks including the big one in the fourth quarter that gave the Bills the chance to rally for the win. And then, after the Knox TD, Mahomes took the field and you’re flat out lying if you weren’t worried because Mahomes with 64 seconds is literally a lifetime.
However, after a holding penalty on Siran Neal gave the Chiefs a first down, Miller and Matt Milano pressured Mahomes and flushed him out to the right. Needing to get rid of the ball he tried to force a throw into rookie receiver Skyy Moore on the right side and Johnson read it and made the pick to seal the victory for Buffalo.
“Play speaks for itself,” Allen said of Miller’s last pressure. “I'm sitting on the sidelines, third down, ‘Come on Von, come on Von.’ Sure enough he goes out there and makes a bunch of plays.”
“Every team that I've been on, that's why I’m there,” Miller said. “Since I got drafted by the Denver Broncos No. 2 in 2011. It's why they traded for me with the Rams last year and that's why I'm here. That's in the job description.”
Miller now has six sacks in the first six games this season and is the prime reason why the pass rush is so much more effective.
Classic bend but don’t break defense
Buffalo’s No. 1-ranked defense gave up season highs of 387 yards, 319 passing yards and 23 first downs, yet it still limited the league’s highest-scoring offense to 17 points.
There were some breakdowns that padded those numbers, particularly when Johnson missed a tackle that allowed JuJu Smith-Schuster to score on a 42-yard play, and Travis Kelce was his usual destructive self, but the Bills came up with two massive turnovers, three sacks, and just enough stops to win the game.
“It was a hardcore game today and it came down to the very end just like we expected it would,” Miller said. “It was a great team win for the Buffalo Bills and we’re going to celebrate this one.”

Running game was effective, for a while
The Bills saw how the Raiders pounded the Chiefs on the ground last week and they seemed determine to test the middle of Kansas City’s defense, too. Devin Singletary was rolling in the first half and the main reason was the work of the offensive line gashing holes for him to run through.
But there were issues in the second half and Singletary did very little. It’s clear he’s the back they’re going to ride, and if there was any question, Zack Moss was inactive for the game, leaving only James Cook in a backup role. And Cook still isn’t a player the Bills fully trust as he had only two touches.
Singletary has to be the bellcow, and he needs to play more like he did in the first half than the second half.
By the numbers
▶ 2 - The Bills defense gave up two pass plays of more than 40 yards to Smith-Schuster after giving up just one in the first five games, the 45-yarder from Tua Tagovailoa to Jaylen Waddle in Miami.
▶ 13 - Allen completed 13 straight passes at one point in the game, a new career high for him. Also, his 17 TD passes in the first six games is the most ever by a Bill, breaking his own mark of 16 set in 2020.
Game balls
▶ QB Josh Allen: It’s redundant, I know, but he makes everything go on offense. I shudder to think what the Bills would do without him. He had another outstanding game, and what I liked best is he shook off some tough moments to beat an outstanding opponent.
▶ WR Stefon Diggs: Diggs took advantage of the young Chiefs secondary and had a huge performance yet again. He now has 49 catches for 646 yards and six TDs.
▶ DE Von Miller: Two sacks and the big pressure at the end of the game. Just as the Bills thought, he makes everyone on the defense better.

What’s next for the Bills
A much-needed week off, and doing so with a 5-1 record given how tough the start of their schedule was is pretty impressive. I said that it would not have surprised me if the Bills got to their bye at 3-3, but there’s any easy case to make that they should be 6-0 because they should never have lost to Miami.
When they return, they’ll face a Green Bay team that is looking quite average after getting smoked at home 27-10 by the suddenly frisky Jets.
