Jets at Steelers: 5 storylines to watch for in Week 7
The New York Jets will turn to the next page of their 2024 NFL regular season.
Following a 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, the Jets (2-4) will visit the Pittsburgh Steelers for a Sunday Night Football matchup at Acquisire Stadium.
But before we even get to kickoff, there will be a lot of Jets-related discussions and conversations to be had throughout the coming days.
With that, here are five storylines to watch for during the lead up to Jets against the Steelers:
Davante, of course
Well... naturally. The biggest storyline in the NFL this week was from the Jets once again. All-Pro receiver Davante Adams was acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. Can he make an instant impact against the Pittsburgh Steelers?
What QB will the defense face?
Despite Justin Fields leading the Steelers to a 4-2 record to start the year, he could be benched in favor of veteran Russell Wilson. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin said Wilson is "in consideration" to start against the Jets as he returns from injury.
Wilson's most-recent spell as a starter... did not go well. The Jets defense might be able to feast in Week 7.
Stopping the run
Against the Bills, the Jets defense had a problem stopping the run. As a team, Buffalo had 149 rushing yards versus New York's defense. It's not going to get any easier stopping the rushing attack with the Steelers and running back Najee Harris on deck next. But if the Jets defense does pull this off... see above. Whether it's Wilson or Fields, you want to Jets to be able to force them into making mistakes.
Can the offense keep building momentum?
The Jets offense did build some momentum in their first game with Todd Downing new calling the plays. In the end, quarterback Aaron Rodgers' magic ran out and another loss was handed to New York. But there were positives. Most of all, the running game--mostly Breece Hall-- really got going.
If the Jets manage to take one more step forward, they could become a hard team to stop.
A desperate win needed
No pressure... but there is pressure. The Jets are staring down the barrel of their season going down the drain very early. A 2-4 record is going to be a tough hole to climb out of. But 2-5 is even harder. Interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich has to get his team focused and ready to handle this task (and perhaps get them to take less penalties).
