Jets Mailbag: Will Aaron Rodgers be back in 2025?

It’s hard to fathom how the Jets got here. The team began the season with such hope and optimism. Justifiably so, too. The roster, once void of playmakers and game changers, was among the most star-studded in the NFL.

Add in a healthy, four-time MVP at quarterback and New York seemed destined to make a run.

Instead, the Jets sit 3-7. They have a 16 percent chance of making the playoffs. Based off their performance in Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals, that seems high.

Aaron Rodgers insists the Jets are holding on to hope. They believe they can still accomplish everything they set out to do so many weeks ago in San Francisco. That’s not exactly reassuring to fans, though, who are beginning to trust what they see over what they hear.

Considering where things stand, we figured it would be a good time to open the mailbag and address your concerns on the state of the Jets...

Will President-Elect Donald Trump reappoint Woody Johnson as Ambassador to the U.K.? – @AnthonyToledo

HUGHES: The Johnson family hasn’t received official word from the Trump administration, but that is the expectation, multiple sources told SNY. Christopher Johnson, Woody’s brother, will take over day-to-day control of the Jets when that happens. Woody Johnson will oversee the hiring of the next head coach and general manager, but then it’s his younger brother’s job.

This should make Jets fans happy – the idea of Christopher taking over. Things did not go particularly well his first time in the position, but his biggest problems were trusting the wrong people for too long. Was Adam Gase the right head coach? No, but the other main players for that job that year were Mike McCarthy, Kliff Kingsbury, and Matt Rhule. Did any of them truly fare any better? His biggest mistake was allowing Mike Maccagnan to stick around as long as he did, but a big reason for that was because he wanted to believe he could turn it around.

Johnson should be much better this time around. Remember: That was his first time running the show for the Jets. He’s learned from those experiences and will be better off for it.

What are the chances we see Tyrod Taylor this year? – @NewYorkJokes

HUGHES: Rodgers isn’t coming out of the lineup as long as the Jets are mathematically alive. This is the same guy who was ready to come back when half recovered from an Achilles injury last season as long as there was any percentage chance. That was going to happen, too. Rodgers was going to play Thursday night against the Browns as long as the Jets beat the Dolphins two weeks prior. They didn’t, so Rodgers was shut down.

Rodgers isn’t bluffing when he says he believes this team is still capable of a run. He’s hellbent on seeing this through. However, when the Jets are eventually eliminated, I do think the Jets will have a discussion with Rodgers about what he wants to do.

He’s beat up, both physically and mentally. If there’s a part of him that wants to play in 2025 then it makes sense to get an early jump on healing up for that. That won’t be something anyone flirts with until the playoff odds sit at zero percent, though.

Will the next Jets draft pick be a quarterback? - @AgentSmith212

HUGHES: The Jets still have talent. I genuinely believe that. I look at their remaining schedule and, in spite of everything that’s gone wrong, see another three or four wins. That’s especially true if the Bills or Dolphins are resting players the final two weeks.

Six or seven wins likely pushes the Jets down to 10-ish in the draft order, at best, considering how bad so many other teams are (11 teams have three wins or fewer). There are just two quarterbacks worthy of a top-10 pick (Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders). The Jets will not be in a position to draft one of them. They could, theoretically, move up to No. 2 if the Jaguars finish with that selection, but they’ll have to fight with others.

A lot of what the Jets do in the draft is determined by whether or not Rodgers returns in 2025. If he does, the new general manager has a decision to make: Draft a quarterback to learn behind Rodgers or draft someone to help Rodgers?

The biggest issue I see is if there’s a quarterback worthy of that selection. It truly will come down to the new GM and head coach’s goals for 2025.

Is there any chance that Aaron Rodgers returns next season? - @JetsMets4Life

HUGHES: Operating under the assumption the Jets don’t make the playoffs, then I believe the only chance is if Christopher Johnson can convince him to. The two have a very close relationship and I do believe there is a chance that Rodgers gives one more year for him. That’s in no way, shape or form a guarantee, though.

This season has taken an immense physical and emotional toll on Rodgers. He’s made comments about his battle with Father Time not going how he planned. He was "90 percent retired" before his darkness retreat. I can’t imagine these last 24 months have made him feel better about playing. That’s not even taking into account the fact he’d have to learn a new offense at 41 years old.

At this point, it seems highly, highly unlikely unless Johnson makes a compelling argument.

Do you think Rex Ryan has a legitimate shot to return to the Jets? - @biasedjetfan

HUGHES: I’m stunned people forget how bad things were for Ryan here his final couple years with the Jets. You think this team is undisciplined? That was another level under Ryan. He was also a complete and total disaster during his brief tenure with the Bills and not one team has realistically entertained him as a head coach or coordinator since.

No, I don’t believe there’s a legitimate shot, nor should there be.
