Jets fire GM Mike Maccagnan; Adam Gase to serve as acting GM
Here’s a surprise: the New York Jets announced on Wednesday that they have fired general manager Mike Maccagnan.
In a statement, team chairman Christopher Johnson said he came to the decision “after much thought and a careful assessment of what would be in the best long-term interests of the New York Jets.”
Johnson also said, “Mike helped to execute the strategic vision of the organization during the last four seasons and especially the last few months.”
Maccagnan had two years left on his contract.
New head coach Adam Gase will serve as acting general manager until a new GM is hired.

In addition, ESPN reports that vice president of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger has also been fired.
Maccagnan hired in 2015
The Jets hired Maccagnan in 2015 from the Houston Texans, where he had spent the previous 15 years working up the personnel ladder.
Maccagnan’s first move was hiring Todd Bowles as head coach, though Bowles was fired earlier this year. At the end of the 2017 season, Maccagnan and New York agreed to a two-year extension which went through the end of the 2020 league year.
New York hired Gase, who had just been fired by the Miami Dolphins, to replace Bowles, and also signed free agent running back Le’Veon Bell to a four-year contract.
With Gase named as acting GM, it’s likely safe to assume that he’ll have a say in who is hired to the general manager position.
Maccagnan brought Heimerdinger to Jets
Heimerdinger and Maccagnan worked together in Houston, and Heimerdinger joined the Jets three years ago. The son of the late Mike Heimerdinger, a longtime NFL assistant coach, he had just completed his first season as head of player personnel.
