Jerry Stackhouse calls Ole Miss 'best team money can buy' after Rebels beat Vanderbilt

OXFORD — Fielding a question about Ole Miss basketball's experience on his postgame radio show Saturday, Vanderbilt coach Jerry Stackhouse called the Rebels the "best team money can buy."

The Rebels beat Vanderbilt 69-56 at the SJB Pavilion, led by 24 points from senior guard Matthew Murrell, who is in his fourth season at Ole Miss.

"Best team money can buy," Stackhouse said. "That's where they are. That's how they approached it. They got it done. It's about adding experience. You add juniors and seniors. You go in the portal, you can add juniors and seniors. We don't add juniors and seniors at Vanderbilt. They just don't transfer to us. That's what it is. So we know that."

Rebuilding its roster following the hiring of coach Chris Beard last March, Ole Miss (15-1, 2-1 SEC) finished with what 247Sports ranked as the No. 9 transfer class in college basketball. The Rebels added six transfer pieces to their roster. Three of them are seniors, including 7-footers Jamarion Sharp and Moussa Cisse, who Stackhouse cited among the Rebels' impact players Saturday.

"They got a nice roster," Stackhouse said. "Obviously, those 7-footers changed the game for them. There's a lot of rim protection around there. They get their hands on the offensive boards. They're big targets on the inside."

Stackhouse's transfer portal class, which included four commitments, ranked 76th nationally last offseason.

3-POINT REVOLUTION: Here's how 3-point shooting is driving Ole Miss basketball's turnaround under Chris Beard

With one of the best-organized collectives in college sports, Ole Miss has welcomed NIL as an opportunity to level up its talent pools. Lane Kiffin's Rebels have certainly done so on the gridiron, where they just won 11 games for the first time ever and have the nation's top transfer portal class.

Rated by the NET among the worst teams in power conference basketball heading into Saturday's action, Vanderbilt (5-11, 0-3) has regressed significantly following last season, when it went 11-7 in conference play. The Commodores missed the NCAA Tournament, but Stackhouse earned Co-SEC Coach of the Year honors.
