Jenny Cavnar will serve as Rockies play-by-play announcer Monday night

Colorado Rockies fans tuning into Monday’s game against the San Diego Padres may hear a familiar voice, but in an unfamiliar role. Jenny Cavnar, who is normally one of the team’s on-field or in-studio reporters, will hop in the booth to call play-by-play.

Once Cavnar begins calling the game, she will become one of the few women to have served in that position.

Gayle Gardner was the first female play-by-play announcer. She called a Rockies-Cincinnati Reds game in 1993. New York Yankees reporter Suzyn Waldman has also provided play-by-play at times during her career.

Cavnar will join ESPN’s Jessica Mendoza as one of the few women to provide either play-by-play or color commentary of a baseball game this season. Mendoza is the color commentator during ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball.” Matt Vasgersian provides play-by-play during “Sunday Night Baseball” broadcasts. He and Mendoza are also joined by former Yankee Alex Rodriguez.

Mendoza gave her support to Cavnar before Monday’s game.

Former Rockies outfielder Ryan Spilborghs, who Cavnar will be working with in the booth Monday, expressed excitement over Cavnar getting a shot, saying she is “breaking through ceilings.”

Cavnar even got to call a home run in her first game, when Nolan Arenado smashed a two-run homer in the first inning. Fire up the fountains!
