Jaylin Williams injury update: OKC Thunder forward out for preseason with hamstring strain

Thunder big man Jaylin Williams suffered a right hamstring strain, which will leave him out at least through the remainder of the preseason, per a team spokesperson.

With the acquisition of Isaiah Hartenstein, Wlliams enters his third season inside a crowded frontcourt. After averaging 4.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and shooting 36.4% from deep last season, Williams could be in a more nuanced role this season.

As Hartenstein works to find his rhythm as a 3-point shooter, Williams remains a relatively confident change of pace for lineups that look to stretch the floor.

Though Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren are better equipped to anchor OKC’s defense, coach Mark Daigneault noted that Williams has set a similar tone vocally as a defender alongside Holmgren and Hartenstein in the opening days of training camp.

“Those guys are really, really verbal players,” Daigneault said. “Defensively especially, that position has to be the most vocal on the court. (Williams) is a very bold communicator in his coverages.”

Williams will be reevaluated after the preseason.
