Javier Báez injury: Detroit Tigers shortstop to undergo season-ending right hip surgery

CHICAGO — Shortstop Javier Báez will not play another game for the Detroit Tigers in the 2024 season.

Báez, 31, needs right hip surgery.

The season-ending arthroscopic procedure is expected to happen next week, but the Tigers did not reveal the date or surgeon because they're still sorting through details.

"We've got to get him right," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Monday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field, after announcing the surgery. "It'll be a long process, but hopefully, it'll be a successful one."

Báez hit .184 with six home runs, 12 walks and 69 strikeouts in 80 games in 2024, completing the third season of a six-year, $140 million contract with the Tigers. Entering Monday, Báez ranked as the second-worst hitter in baseball among 285 players who stepped to the plate at least 250 times, with a .516 OPS.

He made $25 million in 2024.

He is still owed $73 million on his contract in the 2025-27 seasons.

"Getting him healthy is the No. 1 priority, for his own health," Hinch said, "and obviously, to get the best player out of him, we need him healthy. It's no doubt that it's been a really tough stretch for him in his career and a really tough stretch as a Tiger, but it doesn't mean that it can't change. I hope for him — and for us — that this does bring some clarity, get him back to good health and gets him back to preforming the way that he can and will."

The Tigers placed Báez, an 11-year MLB veteran on the 10-day injured list Friday with lumbar spine and hip inflammation, immediately following his warm return to Wrigley Field in a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs.

Three days later, the Tigers transferred Báez to the 60-day injured list before Monday's game against the White Sox as a result of the season-ending surgery, which opened a spot for right-hander Ty Madden — making his MLB debut — to join the 40-man roster.

Báez, who played for the Cubs from 2014-21, has struggled across his three seasons with the Tigers, hitting .221 with a .610 OPS in 360 games. His OPS has fallen in each of the three seasons, from .671 in 2022 to .593 in 2023 to .516 in 2024.

SPRING TRAINING VIBES: Tigers' Javier Báez thinks stronger back, core muscles can help revive his career

He previously spent one month on the injured list in 2024, from June 9 through July 7, with lumbar spine inflammation. He has suffered from lower back pain for several years. The new hip injury, requiring surgery, is connected to the recurring back injury.

The Tigers hope Báez will improve his performance, specifically on offense, in his post-surgery era.

"I do think that's a huge step in getting him back to being able to rotate the way he talks about that he can't, and getting him to fire the way that he can't, and to get back with his agility and mobility," Hinch said.
