With Jameson Williams ailing, Detroit Lions elevate Tom Kennedy, Tim Patrick

The Detroit Lions elevated wide receivers Tom Kennedy and Tim Patrick from practice squad to their gameday roster for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Kennedy played four offensive snaps and returned kicks in last week's win over the Los Angeles Rams. He was not targeted with a pass, though Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said he's valuable as a fifth receiver because of his knowledge of the system.

"Being here, he’s a little bit of a blankie for us because we know if something were to happen, he can play X, F, Z, he can play every spot at the receiver spot," Johnson said. "We feel really good about what he can bring to the table, and I think that gave him the nod last week."

The Lions have only four receivers on their 53-man roster: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Kalif Raymond and Isaiah Williams. Isaiah Williams suffered an abdominal injury in practice this week and was ruled out for Sunday, while Jameson Williams is questionable after practicing on a limited basis all week with an ankle injury.

Patrick signed to the Lions practice squad after being released by the Denver Broncos at the end of the preseason.

At 6 feet 5, he adds a size element to the offense unique from the Lions' other receivers. He said last week about a quarter of the Lions' playbook was similar to the one he ran under Sean Payton in Denver. Patrick has missed the past two seasons with injuries.

"I’m still learning the playbook, still learning the way they do things around here," Patrick said last week. "Like I’m signed to the Detroit Lions, but I don’t feel like I’m a Detroit Lion yet because they do things different and at the end of the day I’m just going to take it one day at a time and whenever my number’s called, best believe I'm going to be ready."
