James Burnip, the Alabama football returner Kalen DeBoer said is having "phenomenal camp"

Alabama punter James Burnip (86) warms up during Practice at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, AL on Saturday, Aug 5, 2023.

The right tackle position might be keeping Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer up at night, but the Crimson Tide's punting most definitely isn't.

Speaking to the media after the Crimson Tide's second, and final scrimmage of fall camp, DeBoer mentioned one player in particular — punter James Burnip — as having a "phenomenal camp."

"First of all Burnip, he has had an amazing camp," DeBoer said on Saturday. "This spring, the first couple days, I'll just be flat out honest. The first couple days of spring ball I thought, 'man, he got a lot of potential, could be a little more consistent.' You saw it at the end of spring ball, that consistency happened. He has been nothing but phenomenal all camp from Day 1. I was interested to see how he'd come through the summer if he was ready to go. He was definitely ready to go."

Burnip, a redshirt senior from Mount Macedon, a town in the state of Victoria in Australia, is entering his fourth season as the Crimson Tide's staring punter. He first assumed the role during his freshman season in 2021, resuming it in 2022 and 2023.

In 2021, Burnip won the starting job during fall camp, going on to punt 48 times for 1,878 yards and force 23 fair catches while landing 15 punts inside the 20-yard line. In 2022, he averaged 42.3 yards per punt with six of 50 or more yards and a long of 58 yards.

Then, last season, the 6-foot-6, 236-pound Burnip had 59 punts for 2,806 yards with five going for 60-plus yards including a career-long of 67-yards coming against Mississippi State. Following the conclusion of last season, Burnip ranked second in the SEC and fifth in the nation with 47.6 yards per punt and was also was named a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, which is presented annually to college football's top punter.

RIGHT TACKLE BATTLE: Alabama football's right tackle battle expected to spill over into season

Out of Burnip's 59 punts in 2023, 22 of those landed inside the 20-yard line, something DeBoer said the specialist is continuing to do well at through fall camp.

"He just continues to not just kick it with great hang time and have distance but you know those special tier areas where you're trying to pin people down inside the 10," he said. "He's been really, really consistent that way too."

Alabama is entering its final week of fall camp ahead of the 2024 season. The Crimson Tide hosts Western Kentucky at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Aug. 31.
