Free agent point guard Jalen Brunson intends to sign a four-year, $104 million deal with the New York Knicks, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Brunson met with the Knicks when free agency opened. The Knicks, long thought to be the frontrunners to land Brunson, ultimately were able to offer Brunson the type of deal he was seeking.

The Knicks reportedly created salary-cap space to offer Brunson that deal when they traded center Nerlens Noel and guard Alec Burks to the Detroit Pistons, clearing $19 million in salary. The Knicks also sent 2023 and 2024 second-round draft picks and $6 million in cash to the Pistons.

In four years with the Dallas Mavericks, Brunson averaged 11.9 points, 3.7 assists and three rebounds per game. The Mavericks made the postseason the past two seasons with Brunson as a reliable backup option behind Luka Doncic. Dallas made the Western Conference finals this season with Brunson averaging a career-high 16.8 points and 4.8 assists per game.

Brunson's dad, Rick, is an assistant coach with the Knicks. Leon Rose, the Knicks' general manager, negotiated Brunson's rookie contract with the Mavericks. Rick Brunson was Rose's first client as an agent.
