Johnson returns to Tech as grad assistant

Former Texas Tech safety Jah'Shawn Johnson, who started 45 games for the Red Raiders, has been added to Joey McGuire's new Tech staff as a graduate assistant on defense.

Johnson played for the Red Raiders from 2014 through 2018.

Over a 51-game career, he made six interceptions and five fumble recoveries and was credited with 324 tackles, including 12 1/2 tackles for loss, one sack, 22 passes defended and five fumbles caused.

Johnson signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2019, but did not make the regular-season roster.

Most recently, he was an assistant at Ennis High School, his alma mater, since August 2020.

Football

Texas Tech lineman Larry Moore has switched sides of the ball and changed uniform numbers. Moore, an offensive lineman his first two seasons with the Red Raiders, now is listed as a defensive lineman on the team roster.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pound sophomore has switched to No. 94 after wearing No. 74 the past two years.

Moore was a starting offensive tackle on state-final teams at Sugar Land Marshall in 2018 and 2019. He redshirted in 2020.

Softball

Texas Tech, coming off a 21-26 season last year, opens the 2022 season with four games in three days at the University of Houston Invitational.

Tech opens against UT-San Antonio at 3 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday, then takes on Houston at 6 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday. ESPN+ is scheduled to air the Tech-Houston games.

UTSA went 15-31 last year, and Houston finished 16-33.

Tech went 3-15 in the Big 12 last year under new coach Sami Ward, finishing sixth out of seven teams. The Red Raiders took third place at the conference tournament.

Tech returns 11 players to go along with six new transfers and seven freshmen. The returnees include shortstop Riley Love and second baseman Arriana Villa, who made the all-Big 12 freshman team last season.

A handful of Red Raiders transferred: pitcher Erin Edmoundson and catcher Kelcy Leach to Tennessee, outfielder Yvonne Whaley to Pittsburgh and infielder Zoe Jones to Wichita State.

Men's tennis

Texas Tech, having played its past five matches on the road, will play its first home matches since Jan. 13 on Friday at the McLeod Tennis Center.

The Red Raiders (4-3) host Louisiana-Lafayette (5-1) at 11 a.m. and New Mexico State (2-4) at 4 p.m. Louisiana-Lafayette has won four in a row, and New Mexico State has lost four in a row.

Tech lost three of the five it played on the road, including a split last weekend in Salt Lake City, where the Red Raiders beat Loyola Marymount 4-1 and lost to Utah 4-0.

Basketball

The Sacramento Kings were planning to waive former Texas Tech guard Jahmi'us Ramsey after Thursday's NBA trade deadline, according to multiple reports by media who cover the Kings.

Ramsey is averaging 3.2 points per game this season. He has played in 19 games, averaging 7.1 minutes.

The 6-3 guard was a Kings second-round draft pick in 2020. As a rookie last season, Ramsey played in 13 games and averaged 3.1 points.

Football

Texas Tech center Dawson Deaton, wide receiver Erik Ezukanma and cornerback DaMarcus Fields are among 324 players invited to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. The NFL announced the complete list on Wednesday.

This year's workouts for the top draft prospects are scheduled from March 1-7 at Lucas Oil Stadium. NFL Network will air daily coverage.
