Ja Morant's close friend Davonte Pack returns to FedExForum after 1-year ban

A close friend of Ja Morant's is allowed to attend Memphis Grizzlies home games again after serving a one-year ban.

Davonte Pack returned to FedExForum for Monday's 103-94 loss to the Sacramento Kings. He sat courtside in his first opportunity to return to the arena.

"It feels good," Pack told The Commercial Appeal. "I love to see the guys come out and do their thing. I wish we could've got the win when I first came back, though. But everything else is everything."

Pack's ban was handed down after he was escorted off the floor following a conflict with a Pacers player during a game on Jan. 29, 2023. Following the game, members of Morant's camp were accused of training a laser at a Pacers team bus. An NBA investigation followed, but interviews and evidence gathered by the league did not show anybody was threatened with a weapon.

In handing out the ban, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass added that "certain individuals involved in the postgame situation and a related matter during the game that night have been subsequently banned from attending games in the arena." Pack was banned one year from games at FedExForum but was allowed to attend road games.

Morant eventually came to Pack's defense and also his own on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Feb. 5 after a report from The Athletic revealed the NBA was investigating the Grizzlies star.

"Did a investigation seen they were cappin," Morant wrote with a laughing emoji, pushing back on the report's findings. "Still let a article come out to paint this negative image on me & my fam . & banned my brother from home games for a year . unbelievable."

Pack often was seen at home games supporting Morant before the ban. During the ban, he attended road games, including Morant’s season debut against the New Orleans Pelicans this season. He also attended a G League Memphis Hustle game with Morant in December.

Pack is also involved in a civil case with Morant stemming from a pickup basketball game in July 2022 with Joshua Holloway, at the time a 17-year-old high school basketball player at St. George's Independent School in Memphis. Criminal charges were filed against Pack after Holloway's attorney, Rebecca Adelman, filed a deposition in which Pack admitted to hitting Holloway after Morant also hit Holloway. The misdemeanor assault charges were dismissed in November 2023.

Much changed for the Grizzlies during Pack's ban. Most notably, Morant is out for the remainder of the season after having surgery on his right shoulder.

Even though Morant won't be suiting up this season, Pack expects to spend a lot of time at FedExForum.

"Regardless of 12 playing, I'm a Memphis Grizzly," Pack said. "It's just that."
