Still 'Fine in the West': Ja Morant won't back down on confidence in Memphis Grizzlies

It's been almost two months since Ja Morant told ESPN that the Memphis Grizzlies were "fine in the West" and only worried about the Boston Celtics. A lot has changed since then.

The Western Conference landscape drastically changed after last week's trade deadline, led by Kevin Durant being traded to the Phoenix Suns. CJ McCollum, Shannon Sharpe and fans have joked if the Grizzlies still think they're fine.

But Morant didn't waver from his comments. On Sunday, he stood by them once again after the Grizzlies lost in Boston.

“I don’t care. Honestly. I said what I said, and I mean that,” Morant told reporters. “The confidence I had when I said that is the confidence that got us to the point we’re at now, being a top team in this league.”

It's not the first time Morant has doubled down. On Dec. 23 in Phoenix, he defended his remarks when asked by reporters ahead of the Grizzlies' win over the Suns.

"Honestly, I don't care about anybody else feedback but ours," Morant said then. "That's how we feel. That's how confident we are in our abilities and where we think we stand in the Western Conference."

Things are different now, however. The Grizzlies have lost nine of their last 12 games, including a six-game losing streak against Western Conference opponents. They've lost several games on national television, including two to the Golden State Warriors.

Not only did the Suns add Kevin Durant, the Dallas Mavericks traded for Kyrie Irving. Steven Adams' injury has made the Grizzlies' half-court offense issues more visible, especially on second-chance points and offensive rebounding.

None of that has changed Morant's defiant tone. It's fueled the Grizzlies' rise during his career, and neither losses nor trades will change his mind on supporting his team as the West got tougher.

“Yeah, my confidence will never change. I don’t care who got something to say about it," Morant said.
